We are trying to figure out room arrangements for when kid #2 (a boy) arrives in a few months. There are 3 bedrooms on the second floor of our house. DD is currently in the smallest bedroom, then a larger spare bedroom that is basically empty, plus our master bedroom. Either way, DD will be moving from a crib into a toddler bed; we'll also do some redecorating to make her room a "big girl" space. Also, both DD's room and the spare bedroom are directly across the hall from our bedroom, so it's not a question of distance for MOTN feedings, etc.
Which option sounds the best?
1. Keep DD in her current room and put the baby in the spare bedroom - would have to move all baby furniture to the other room (crib, glider/ottoman, dresser/changing table) - less transition for DD, although she would still go from a crib to a toddler bed - maybe easier to decorate/plan a boy nursery from scratch in an empty room
2. Move DD to the spare bedroom and put the baby in DD's old room - less moving furniture, since that room is already set up as a nursery - bigger room for a toddler to play in (could be a bad thing during naptime?) - DD's room is painted light gray - very neutral and easy to switch out rug/curtains/decor for more boyish things
I voted for #2, since that's what we're doing Plus, we'd have to take the crib apart to move it between rooms, and that's just one more hassle I don't want to deal with.
We're hoping to move DD1 in the next few weeks (DD2 is due in late August) so that 1) whatever sleep loss might come with the transition is over and done with well before we're dealing with newborn-induced sleep loss; and 2) DD1 will hopefully have been in her "big girl room" long enough that she doesn't feel like we've kicked her out to give the baby her room.
We're doing #2, and part of the reasoning is that we moved DD straight to a twin mattress because we're keeping the crib/toddler bed in the nursery. So DD's mattress takes up more room, and when DS switches to a toddler bed it'll just be converting the crib. Even though your DD is staying in a toddler-sized bed, she'll still move up to a larger bed before your DS does, so having the larger room makes sense.
Decorations were not an issue for us since we're lame. Redecorating the nursery for us consisted of moving the quilt with DD's name on it to her new room, and we'll hang up the one with DS's name when it's done (my mother is making it).
