Help me decide new vs used SUV. My husband'scar was totaled about a month ago. We have been looking at RAV4, Forester, rogue, eqounix, Traverse, and a few others. He has also looked at Mazda cx9 and Honda Pilots used. So first would you go used or new? he seems to think he wants a third row, hence the pilot and Mazda. New this cars are more theni feel comfortable with.
How is the best way to determine what we should spend on a car?

We're in the process of buying a new car, too. We try to keep all of our bills within one of our paychecks, so that determined what we're going to spend.
We're still deciding, but I think we've decided that we would rather have something a little nicer that's a year or two older.

I love love love my 2015 rav4 limited. I would stick with Honda or Toyota for reliability. I had a 2013 Mazda cx5 before this one and it had a ton of engine trouble and rattles and shakes. The quality was horrible. I think used would be fine with honda or toyota. I'd never consider a Chevy, especially used.
Nissan came out with a third row option for the Rogue in 2014. I think it's cheaper than the Honda Pilot. Dealerships are probably starting to consider making room for 2016 models. You can probably find a new 2014 at a dealership still new but cheaper.
What can you afford to spend monthly and still pay off the car in full within 3 years? Let that be your guide. Do NOT finance longer than 3 years. So - good trade in? large down payment? and of course LOW interest on any loan
Talk with your local credit union or bank prior to setting foot on any car lot (ask for interest rates on loans for new or used vehicles in which you may be interested. That give you information that will help determine if the dealership is offering a better or worse financing package.
I've had a Honda Pilot and loved it, and we currently have a 2012 Toyota Highlander with captain seats in the middle row because we regularly use the third row (3 kids all in seats). LOVE it.
