When I was a junior in high school, I did something no desert-dweller should ever do - I put my shoes on without first checking for spiders or scorpions. A moment later, it felt like there was a thorn in my shoe, so I took it off. There on my foot was a giant black widow. I screamed and kicked it across the porch. I felt okay, besides being terrified. I went upstairs to tell my mom. She looked at it and thought that I was being my usual dramatic teenage self, and she told me to get to school. As I drove to school, my leg started cramping up horribly. When I arrived, I went directly to the office and said, "I think I need to leave, a black widow bit my foot." My mom picked me up and took me to the ER, where they gave me pain meds and whatever else they give you when you are bitten by a black widow. They also gave me a topical cream for the bite, which I ended up being allergic to. The next 2-3 days were the worst agony I've ever been through. You know the feeling when your foot cramps up, or you get a severe cramp in your leg during the night? It felt like that, but it was every single muscle in my body, all day long. Plus, my foot was super itchy from being allergic to the cream they gave me. I couldn't walk up the stairs to my room and I had to sleep on the pull-out couch for a few days. I vaguely remember people visiting me, but the only thing that I really remembered afterward was the horrific muscle cramping. OMG. Worst. Check your shoes. Fin.
I've actually heard that most people don't have bad reactions like that, but eff. It was awful.

That sounds horrific! On a positive note, you can always use "remember that time you senTme to school after a black widow bit me?" as payback on your mom.

I see your black widow and raise you...
When I was 19, I was laying in bed and rolled over and my leg brushed my body pillow. I felt a poke but was like "It must've been a feather." And closed my eyes. Then I realized I don't have feather pillows. I jumped out of bed and my thigh felt like it was on fire. I threw the covers back and saw a baby bark scorpion run across my bed. I ran to my mom and dad's room screaming. lol My dad got up and went to find and kill the thing while my mom called poison control.
Long story short, I'm not allergic, but it hurt for about 3 days.
My dad did scorpion checks in my room with a black light until I moved out. lol
I like how in the article, the supermarket says, "We replaced the product in the customer's fridge as a precaution." LOLOL Gee, thanks for giving me a new bag of grapes while I am hospitalized with a black widow bite.
