As a single mother, camp was always such a source of stress for me. He actually went to sleep away camp when he was older which was amazing but ungodly expensive. He wanted to do the counselor in training program, but you had to be there the whole summer AND pay for it. It was over $8K and this was 10 years ago. I felt so bad that I couldn't send him.

OMG what kind if camp is this? If we did the overnight options for 9 weeks for DS at full price is is only $4k.
Yes. I wrote a check for $1300 for 6 weeks of summer school, although that includes field trips and piano lessons. Still...that doesn't include her regular extracurriculars and other stuff we want to do this summer. OUCH.
I never went to ANY camps growing up. I can't be the only one.
My mom sent me and my brothers to Jesus camp for a week once because it was free. Lol. It actually wasn't that bad, just the one bible study session a day and the rest was just regular camp stuff. But that was the only time we went to camp.

I'm annoyed I have to pack a lunch for camps. I hate packing lunches. I'd rather fork over money and have them feed my kids. They will be eating PB&J every day. sorry kids.
I've had 2 in some kind of care year round for over 3 years now. It is no bueno.

My mom was a teacher so we'd spend Pre and Post planning with my Grandparents, be with her the rest of the summer but a few summers I did Girl Scout daycamp and when I was in 4th and 5th I did the county's enrichment camp through the school system which was super cheap (did sign language and babysitter's cert. class one year, photography and creative writing the other)
Most of my friends without SAHP had to do some form of camp/daycare, most protested daycare by 2nd grade because they were 'too big' so parents put together camps. I nannied for a 2nd and 4th grader the summer before getting married.

We didn't. I mean, my mom sent us to some arts and crafts thing at a school across the street for a couple of hours, and I did a couple of weeks of VBS, but mainly we stayed home.

I HEAR YOU!!!! It sucks. Last year we sent DS to the Y which gets really good reviews and many people love it. It's also the cheapest option. He HATED it. I just can't send him again. So... off to the more expensive camps. Luckily, due to DHs job, we don't have to send him every week. But still... it's a hit.
My kids always went to the Y and it was 220 a week x 2 kids x 11 weeks of summer and then extra for before or after care. We spent 6-8 most summers (as some specialty sports camps there were 275 etc).
Last year we stumbled upon a park and rec camp in our town. 475.00 PER KID for the ENTIRE SUMMER. so we spend less then 1k and they had their best camp summer yet.

I grew up in the middle-of-nowhere-farmland-Ohio.
We did vacation Bible school one week of the summer, where we went to church every day in the mornings and it was basically Sunday school with extra crafts and playing Red Rover in the front yard. Other than that, we were with a sitter when we were little.
I went to one sleep-away camp ever in junior high (church camp! Came home with lice). There weren't really local day-camp kind of things. We had no YMCA or city rec center or museums or zoos or such things -- you had to drive 45+ minutes to get to those kind of places.
Occasionally we did activities like summer swim team, but actual day-long camps were really hard to come by.
It was no huge loss when I started working in the summers at 13, lol. Things are already hugely different for my kids, growing up in the suburbs.
I wonder if my kid will be missing out since he will always be a full time daycare kid. I thought camps were large for kids of SAH moms/dads, no?
There are 2 kinds of camps around here. Summer enrichment for SAH or nanny families and all day camp which serves the function of daycare for school age kids.
My DD was at daycare camp until this summer (yay for one pickup/dropoff!). She was super bored and I felt like they didn't do enough with them for how much I was paying (which was a lot). This year she's going to nature camp close by that was a little more $ but different themes each week and structure. My anxiety is about packing waste free lunches. Like zero trash, there are no trash cans kind of thing.
ETA- Dd is 7, rising 2nd grade. I have a DS in full time daycare preschool he's 4
