wo anonymous federal law enforcement officials said that indicted former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) allegedly agreed to pay out $3.5 million in hush money to cover up sexual misconduct with another man, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday.
Hastert was indicted Thursday on charges of structuring bank withdrawals to avoid federal reporting requirements and lying to the FBI about those withdrawals. The former speaker allegedly had withdrawn $1.7 million in cash out of $3.5 million he agreed to pay an unidentified individual in compensation for "prior misconduct" on Hastert's part that had occurred years earlier.
One anonymous official told The Los Angeles Times that "Individual A," the other person is identified in the indictment, is a man.
The official added that the misconduct dates back to Hastert's time as a high school teacher and coach in Yorkville, Illinois, where "Individual A" is from, and that Hastert was making the payments to conceal a past sexual relationship with him. The second anonymous official told the Times that the "misconduct" alleged in the indictment was sexual abuse.
The Los Angeles Times could not reach Hastert or his attorneys for comment, while Hastert's own lobbying firm declined comment.
does blackmail every really work? I feel like you pay somebody & they could always demand more $ or spill your secret or somebody find out some other way.
Do we know that for sure? They said it was abuse, and they referred to his victim as a man, but it wasn't clear to me if the victim was a man at the time, or if he's a man now, but was a boy at the time.

Yeah, I am guessing the man was a minor when it happened.
Are we sure this individual was an adult at the time of the relationship though? All I see is a reference to a past relationship and then stating the "misconduct" was sexual abuse, so it seems to implicate that it wouldn't be over a consensual relationship. Obviously I hope I'm wrong.
yea, i guess i assumed it was a homosexual relationship with another coach...not a minor
See, I'm not inclined to think it was an adult because to me, that's the kind of money you pay when you're worried you could go to jail. There have been enough R politicians have gay relationships surface for him to know that he would be able to have a life after it came out. $3.5 million is a LOT of money. That's the kind of money you pay when you know something would finish you forever, like sexual abuse of a minor.
This is the most amoral despicable political party in the history of ever.
Don't gloat! Next thing we know, Clinton and Sanders will be accused of soliciting underaged prostitutes provided by Prince William at the Notorious RBG's house.
A C-SPAN caller’s mysterious question to Dennis Hastert last year has taken on a new meaning in light of recent allegations that the former House Speaker illegally paid $3.5 million in hush money to an unidentified resident of Yorkville.
The call was placed during a 2014 interview on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal.”
“Hello, Denny,” said the caller, who identified himself as Bruce. “Do you remember me from Yorkville?”
The caller then laughs and hangs up the phone, and the interview moves on without further comment. Footage of the call garnered newfound attention after a federal grand jury indicted Hastert on Thursday for allegedly paying an acquaintance in his hometown of Yorkville hush money over “prior misconduct.”
We don`t know what that is, but here`s two things to consider: this is going to sound like it`s really out of left field, but it`s a connection to this that seems like we ought to consider given this -- given the opacity of the indictment on this point. Do you remember the Sibel Edmonds case? She was an FBI-translator- turned-whistleblower who said during the George W. Bush era that she had been fired when she tried to expose legal and scandalous things that she had overheard in her job as an FBI translator. One of the things, one of the lower-profile things that she alleged in the year 2005 was that she had overheard Turkish wiretap targets bragging that they were secretly paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to the then-speaker of the House, Denny Hastert. That was one of the allegations made by Sibel Edmonds. I do not know what to make of those allegations but those allegations exist from a decade ago. They may now be cast in a new light given this indictment.

OMG. I bet he had actual shit in his pants after that interview.

Edit - PDQ
I think people get really desperate and just hope it will.
I know someone who was getting blackmailed because someone found out about a medical condition he had that he felt would damage his reputation if learned. So he had a very creative scheme for stealing from his company that went undetected for a year, using the money to pay off the blackmailer.
The company found out and he will be prosecuted. His reputation and career are destroyed as a result.

This doesn't surprise me at all.
Also, for some reason his name is ringing a distant bell about another scandal a few years ago. I don't usually remember names, but for some reason his is in my memory. Help anyone?
