It seems many Rs on here are running away from social conservatism like a hot potato. I don't remember it being this way 5 years ago. Does this board have any social cons left? If not, does this say anything about the social con movement?
AW, Lys and Vt2 are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head and I'm not sure they are as socially conservative as some of my neighbors
I'm not sure it says anything more than there is a divide in the R party and we don't attracted the social conservatives over here. Heck I wouldn't want to go to church with some of my neighbors and I doubt they'd want to hang out discussing politics here.
Who was a social conservative 5 years ago? I can't even think of any. Pamela maybe? I am not even sure and I apologize if I am not remembering correctly.
I think there are posters who are social conservatives but are afraid to come out as such because they know they would get pummeled by this board.
It could also be a generational thing. Younger people tend to be less socially conservative than older people. Younger people tend to post more on message boards, especially on a board like TN.
Obviously this isn't the case for every single person but I think it explains things at least somewhat.

I know AW was much more socially conservative during the E08 days. Her stance seems to have changed a lot since then.

I think she only came on scene last year. I really am trying to remember any, outside of the drivebys. We did have a lot of those.

My personal views are extremely conservative, but the older I am getting, the less I find myself identifying with social conservatism. I'm not planning at this point to vote for Romney/Ryan. I'll probably write in Jesus. lol
I consider myself a social conservative. Pro-gay marriage, anti-abortion, pro-birth control, pro-2nd amendment... I can't think of what other issues factor in. I almost never post in any abortion related threads b/c I find it to be a useless endeavor.

This is what I think as well.
I'd like to ask a serious question: is this expressed with a tone of matter-of-fact or hellz-yeah-they'll-get-smacked-down?
I ask because I think there's a difference between someone skating in here and spewing racism and judgment and stone-age perspectives vs. someone trying to participate, engage in dialogue and dissect not only their own perceptions and beliefs but those of regulars here. (I'd venture to say AW fell/falls into the latter.)
I just feel incredibly icky if pummeling any dissenting voices is seen as a badge of honor, KWIM?
AW was definitely around (and a very active poster) during E08. I actually thought she was a troll then.
Sorry! I actually took a break from the board after the last election and when I came back your tone was different and everyone loved you. It was fascinating. Your rhetoric has definitely changed a LOT since then, and I've actually been able to learn a lot from you whereas before I think you were so over-the-top that I just blew you off as crazy or fake or something. I'm glad you stuck around.
I think we should outline what constitutes social issues first. Gay marriage and abortion are almost always the first two issues mentioned here. I guess my list of social issues would be:
Reproductive freedom Marriage equality Gender equality Environmental issues Drug criminalization Welfare (in a broad sense) Education
And now I'm drawing a blank after I got interrupted.

Women's rights Health care Education Affirmative action Environmental policy Prisoner rights/court reform Immigration policy Welfare/social safety net
There's some bleed over with some of these as economic issues, but there are people on this board who's stance on these issues is influenced primarily by a social view that the board generally describes as "boot straps." I think there are a number of Social Darwinists/Ayn Rand types here. I think they don't post their opinions because of the skittles-type comments.
Jinx! I wrote my list above before I saw this one.
Hmm...honestly folks? I don't know what I would call myself anymore because despite my strong, conservative religious leanings I'm not actively out there trying to make anything legal/illegal that goes against those beliefs.
With respect to anything political I think Queen Cynic is more apropos these days. But maybe I'm more of a moderate these days in all arenas.

I'm going to crawl on 2V's train here.
Also, I just want the government out of my business. Period. I think that's the biggest reason for my change over the last few years. I'm sick of it all and I just don't really care. Marry who you want. Do what you want. Smoke what you want. It doesn't matter to me. Ultimately, we don't answer to the government. We answer to God, so why does this stuff even matter?
I think chichimi is also prolife. But i'm pretty sure she's all over the map on the rest of the designated social issues so she doesn't really fit the social con mold any better than aw or 2V.
