When you get you BFP (positive thinking everyone!) do you plan to register for baby items?
If you do, name some things you will want/must have vs things you have no interest in. I'm looking for stuff beyond the normal requests like diapers, cribs, etc. More like stuff you want that you may technically be able to live without, or something everyone says is the new trend that you're pooh-poohing.

Must have: cloth diapers some sort of baby carrying device a way to side car the kid's bed to ours wooden toys
No thanks: a bouncy seat...I will probably end up wanting one, but my nephew sat in his all the time and it irritated me a big ol' highchair a bunch of toys that need batteries
My H really wants a video monitor, so he'll be in charge of researching that!

In NL it's absolutely and completely uncommon (and super rude) to register for things. Registering is perceived as being gift-greedy (and so are baby showers, by the way, IF someone throws you one, it's really just a fun party without real gifts. The only gifts I've ever seen anyone receive was when the host included a request with the invite to bring a onesie for a guessing game (they were hung on a clothes-line and the mom to be had to guess who brought which one, and she got to keep them all.)
People give gifts when they come meet the baby after (s)he's born and presents are usually in the onesie/teddy bear category and price range.
That said, I will probably create an amazon.com/co.uk wishlist so that my american friends and family who might want to do something have a way of buying something and getting it to me, without me getting all kinds of stuff that won't work here or are US size while I'll really need EU size. If any Euro people would ask for present suggestions, that's what I'll refer them to.
My big thing is books. I'll be registering/asking/looking for the same books in Dutch, English and Italian. I know a lot of classics like very hungry caterpillar are available in a zillion languages, so that's the uncommon thing I'll be "registering" for, as we'll be raising our child tri-lingual.
Also wooden toys and toys that don't have a previous specified functions. I love love love toys that trigger children's creativity and hate the plastic beeping noisy battery operated things that only do 1 specified thing. Fun things I can find in that department will also go on the wish list.
I know I'll be super picky regarding a crib and stroller and such, so I won't put those down as I do believe that if I'm that crazy picky, I should just foot the bill myself. (I'm weird, I know.)

I'm not registering and I still have everything from DD, but I want to talk baby items anyway.
1. A good carrier. I am leaning toward an Ergo.
2. Swaddle Me blankets. Life saver in the beginning and I'm swaddling impaired. I thought those A&A blankets were overrated.
3. Before my m/c, I bought a little rubber toy similar to the Sophie the Giraffe.
4. A good nursing cover. Blankets won't stay on and the nursing cover I had had boning in the top so I could look down and see what I was doing which was really nice in the beginning.
5. A good pump. I had a manual and an electric and I couldn't get a drop from it. It took me a while to pump, so I'm glad I had a double instead of a single.
6. Shopping cart cover. DD always tried to chew on the cart. +o(
7. Rocking recliner. I liked to put DD on the arm rest in the football hold while nursing.
8. My breast friend pillow. I've never tried it, but I wasn't a big fan of the Boppy.
9. Snoogle. Would you judge me if I said I kind of want one of these even when I'm not pregnant?
10. Lightweight stroller
Things I would skip 1. Big highchairs. I could've gotten by with just my 2 in 1 booster.
2. Wipes warmer, bottle warmer, diaper stacker, and sterilizer
3. Bouncer
4. Bumbo
5. Baby sling. My boobs are too big. I always felt like she was going to fall out or I was going to smother her.
6. Boppy. I never liked it for breastfeeding, but I did use it a little for tummy time.
7. Expensive activity mat. She was just as happy with a blanket and some toys.
The only gifts I've ever seen anyone receive was when the host included a request with the invite to bring a onesie for a guessing game (they were hung on a clothes-line and the mom to be had to guess who brought which one, and she got to keep them all.)
This is such a cute idea! I bet people would have an awesome time getting creative with their purchase. I love unconventional onesies.
