Washington (CNN) -- A shooting in the lobby of the conservative Family Research Council in Washington wounded a security guard Wednesday, investigators said.
The suspect, who the FBI said was in custody, made some comments about the organization before opening fire, a law enforcement official said. The official had no details on the specific remarks, but said at least one witness heard them.
Officials are interviewing the injured guard and others, the official said, describing the suspect as being in his late 20s.
The guard was shot in the arm and hospitalized, according to Metropolitan Police spokesperson Araz Alali.
No charges have been filed, and the FBI continues to investigate the motive and whether the shooting was linked to the Family Research Council, FBI spokeswoman Jacqueline Maguire said. The case is being worked jointly by the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department "to determine motive/intent and whether a hate crime/terrorism nexus exists," said Maguire.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, "Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family."
Launched in 1983, the Family Research Council says it promotes "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion." Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters the gunman entered the building at the corner of 8th and G streets and opened fire when confronted by the guard.
The wounded guard and others wrestled the suspect to the ground. "The security guard did a phenomenal job," said Maguire.
A security guard at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., was shot and injured Wednesday morning.
The shooting occurred on the 800 block of G Street NW, inside the Christian lobbying organization’s headquarters, FRC President Tony Perkins confirmed in a statement.
“The police are investigating this incident. Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family,” he said.
Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Officer Araz Alali confirmed to POLITICO that one security guard, an adult male, was shot in the arm at about 10:50 a.m. and was conscious and breathing after the shooting. He was rushed to a local hospital and is in stable condition, according to MPD Police Chief Cathy Lanier.
Lanier told reporters that the suspect entered the building and was confronted by the security guard.
“He opened fire on the security guard,” she said. “The security guard was struck, is right now receiving treatment and is in stable condition. The security guard and others wrestled the suspect down to the ground and he is in custody.”
Alali said one suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting and the investigation is ongoing. There is no motive in the case yet, Alali said.
The FBI also is investigating and an evidence response team is on the scene now, FBI public affairs specialist Rebecca Callahan told POLITICO. A suspect is in custody, she said, but it is too early to determine the person’s motive. Authorities have blocked off half of 8th Street between G and H streets.
Meanwhile, Fox News has reported sources said the suspect was 28 years old, possibly posed as an intern, and had multiple weapons. According to a Fox News, a source said the suspect “made statements regarding their policies, and then opened fire with a gun striking a security guard.” Jacqueline Maguire, a spokesperson with the Washington Field Office of the FBI, told POLITICO she could not confirm whether the gunman made any political statements at the time of the shooting.
Meanwhile, Beverly Crossley, who said she works in the adjoining building, said she saw the suspect in handcuffs. She described him as a “light skinned, middle-aged” African American who “had blood on his body” going down the left side of his tan pants. Maguire said she could not confirm Crossley’s description. The FRC is a conservative Christian non-profit organization that advocates and lobbies for socially conservative policies.

Holy Shit. That's really close to where I live, and exactly where I was walking yesterday with my DS. Scary. Glad the gunman was stopped before wreaking too much havoc.
I am so sick of this shit. Sick of it. Dayum it people. It is NEVER ok to just shoot up people because they don't agree with you. I don't care what the fucking religion, skin color, gender, sexual orientation is, you don't MUTHAFUCKING SHOOT PEOPLE! What the fuck is so hard about this?

What she said. I am getting so sick of this crap.
I'm glad the guy didn't do more damage and I hope the guard pulls through.

The WaPo article said he was shot in the arm and that he was alert and breathing when taken to the hospital, so it sounds as if he'll be OK, thankfully.

Also glad it seems the guard is going to be ok, and sending thoughts to his family and friends.
This is possibly flammable, and while I would NEVER NEVER EVER advocate shooting people I disagree with and I think anyone who does is totally BSC and inappropriate and vile, I can't say I'm surprised it happened or that it hasn't happened before now. FRC has been a very active, influential, and outspoken advocate for hateful causes (hence the designated hate group label) for quite some time. I can see how it might end up being a target much in the way that late-term abortion clinics are targeted. Not sure exactly what the motivation was in this shooting but I can't imagine it was just totally random and unrelated to the mission of FRC. Sad all around.

Extremism in any form is disgusting and leads to shit like this. It makes me furious and sad and scared all at the same time. Agree to disagree with someone respectfully and move the fuck on.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
Also glad it seems the guard is going to be ok, and sending thoughts to his family and friends.

I actually looked at this like I do abortion clinic shooter idiots. As in, WTF are you thinking shooting people just b/c you disagree with them. Disagreeing with them means you're supposed to respect life and liberty MORE. This is such hypocritical, assbackwards, horrifying bullshit. It doesn't matter how much you disagree with them. What they do doesn't even come close to justifying this.

I was really glad to see the response from LGBT orgs today quickly condemning this mess.
