Boooo to the anti vaxxer. I don't think I've met one in person (unless you count my SMIL who is antivax for her dogs but that doesn't really count)
It's a group sponsored by the hospital for new moms. It's run by a nurse and is great for connecting with other moms and taking the loneliness out of being a mom.
They have one for birth to 6 months and one 6 months+. And it's only $3 per class.
Do people wear their vaccination status on a name tag other places or something? The vaccination status of other people's kids has never come up where I live on the playground, in a class, or anywhere else that I have ever been around children. Is this just an Ohio thing?
I know of one person who doesn't vaccinate her kids. Her oldest had a reaction to her first round of shots and was sent to the hospital. It scared her to death and she hasn't vaccinated since. I don't blame her, to be honest. And our kids play wonderfully together.

This woman is the bragger type. If you say your kid started sleeping through the night at 6 months, she says hers did it by 3 months, etc. So she brought up finding a new pediatrician but only wanted one that was "holistic" and her current one doesn't even offer vaccinations - so she told the whole class he wasn't vaccinated. The looks on half the mom's faces was sheer terror, as was mine, I'm sure.

How can a licensed pediatrician not offer vaccines? This guy sounds like a woo-woo doctor and not a real one.

Actually, we just found a pediatrician here in LV and he did not have vaccines. I was like :-| As he explained it, virtually no peds except the large practices have them. Apparently the state used to have a program where every child got free vaccines, but then a few years ago they cut the funding. So now when they bill insurance for vaccines, insurance companies are like "nuh-uh, your vaccines are free" and won't cover them, even though they're not anymore. So they just stop offering vaccines. The only place you can get them is at the public health clinic. So apparently Nevada has a low vaccination rate now because of this.

Yay for small government!
WTF?! That kind of makes me want to stab my eyes out with a spork. :-|
I know. Unless this doctor is full of it and is completely wrong about this, I am
sounds fishy to me. One call from a doctor, with supporting documentation on this change should do it, no, especially with aca?
Actually I just did some research and apparently this is correct. I couldn't find info about how many pediatricians have decided to stop offering vaccines, but he was right about the changes to the program in 2009 - the state stopped providing free vaccines to all children and now only covers a certain segment. I also found a survey of pediatricians in Southern Nevada from 2009 and a segment of them did say that the program changes would impact vaccine availability at their practice. So I wouldn't be surprised if he was correct about the insurance companies giving them such a hard time that it's no longer worth it to offer them.
That said, I was really upset that nobody at the office told us that they have no vaccines when we made our appointment. I would have tried to find a larger practice that does offer them if I had known. We even offered to pay out of pocket but he doesn't even stock them at all.
I'm in baby class and one girl is an anti-vaxxer. Shit. Now I'm completely freaked out. I'm glad I'm sitting a few seats away.
I guess there are some negatives to living in Portland.
ONE negative that I can see. One!
But yeah, that's a biggie. Plus Oregon is close to Washington and they have dismal vax rates.
Right?? My aunt and uncle are foster parents in the Portland area, and they can't bring the baby to come visit my Mom in WA State unless they make NO stops in public places (ie restaurants, rest stops, etc) due to the dismal vax rates in Washington. WTF happened to my state?

Why is Miss Holistic at a hospital baby meeting anyway? Seems like an odd fit for her. One would think she'd be more apt to be part of a crunchy mamas group of some kind.
H has a friend at work whose wife runs an in-home daycare, and their two kids aren't vaxed. I somehow doubt she asks her clients about vaccines, and I wouldn't be surprised if she caters to non-vaxers. It wouldn't bother me if it weren't for the daycare aspect. I really hope H doesn't want to invite them to DD's first birthday party, because I don't really want to have the conversation that I'm not really comfortable with it.
I don't want to treat people we know like lepers, but I don't really want my kid in close contact with un-vaxed kids who spend every day with other un-vaxed kids.

I understand being concerned, but really 1. if a child has been recently vaccinated with a live virus vaccine, the virus can shed, and that VACCINATED child can infect your child, and 2. supposedly "vaccine preventable diseases" can and DO spread among highly vaccinated populations, meaning that your child could just as easily be infected by a vaccinated child as a non-vaccinated one.
If you don't want your child around this family, then talk to your DH now about your concerns so he doesn't inadvertently bring up the party and end up verbally inviting them and leaving you in the position of either grudgingly sending an invite or feeling like you need to reject them and create an awkward situation for your husband with his coworker.
Between DD going to a daycare that required vaccines and living in the shadows of multiple hospitals, and living in NYS who is has more vax requirements that's more of a PITA to get around, I feel we'd be hard pressed to find anti-vaxxers around us. Having said that, no I didn't think to bring it up at the birthday party we recently went to, lol.
