DANNEMORA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Police are currently searching for two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border in upstate New York.
Authorities say 48-year-old Richard Matt and 34-year-old David Sweat escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora early Saturday morning. State Police say they received a call from the prison at 5:45 a.m. with information that Matt and Sweat were unaccounted for during a 5:30 a.m. bed check.
Sweat is serving a sentence of life without parole. He was convicted of first-degree murder for killing a Broome County sheriff’s deputy in 2002.
Matt is serving a sentence of 25 years to life. He was convicted of murder, kidnapping and robbery after he kidnapped a man and beat him to death in 1997.
Matt is 6’ tall, 210 pounds, with black hair and hazel eyes. He has tattoos on back “Mexico Forever,” a heart on his chest and left shoulder, and a marine corps insignia on his right shoulder.
Sweat is 5’11” tall, 165 pounds, brown hair and green eyes. He has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers.
Both men are considered to be a danger to the public. If located police say do not approach them. Contact 911 or the New York State Police immediately at (518) 563-3761.
Wow. I drive by there to go shopping sometimes. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere up on a mountain. Just a tiny isolated town. Unless they had help and a ride waiting I imagine they have quite a walk ahead. Hope they're caught.

I doubt you can pull something like that off unless you have outside help.

...and to think I used to giggle at the "Correctional facility area--do not pick up hitchhikers" sign along the through way next to a different maximum security prison upstate.
We've driven past this area many times on the way to and from Montreal. They really could be anywhere. Hell, it wouldn't shock me if they purposely made their way to Canada (not that Canada will want them, but still).

They were talking about that this morning on the news. What a scary situation since obviously neither of them have anything to lose. I mean, how do you get power tools that can saw through the steel to do this , plus the planning and knowledge of the building that must have went on. Its just dumbfounding.

That is crazy - a concrete saw would be so loud, no?
Plus I laughed at the statement in the linked article, "The prison is about 20 miles from the Canadian border. Roadblocks were set up in the area, WIRY-AM reported."
Um, a roadblock? That's good, but don't you think they'd cross NOT at the actual crossing? I mean, if it's anything like between MT and Canada, there's a lot of border that might now have eyes on it all the time.
