I'm sorry. I'd keep the windows closed if you can. We got our new appliances installed when I was pregnant and the installation guy turned the oven on to burn off the new chemical smell. Right after they left I ran outside and threw up. I threw up at least once more that day too. Pregnancy nose plus "morning" sickness is like a cruel joke.

Can you talk to the neighbors about the wood they are burning? It shouldn't be that smokey or strong. Are they burning other items like leaves? Unaged wood? You should be able to enjoy your home too. Maybe invite them over if you feel safe doing so to see what your house is smelling like and how smokey it is
So many ((hugs))! I'm sorry you are dealing with bad neighbors...it really is the worst and so stressful (we have one bad neighbor too and he kept C from napping all day yesterday so I totally get it). Hope you are feeling better today!
bricco - I was going to make that recommendation, too. It sucks that you'll be forced to close up your house every time they do it, but maybe they would be willing to give you a heads up so that you can close everything up before your house is filled with smoke.
Hi guys - thanks for your replies. I had 3 upstairs windows open on that side, and we were downstairs...by the time I started to smell it, the entire upstairs was totally filled with it. H closed the windows right away, but it was too late.
I feel a little better today. I understand they can do whatever they want on their property, I just wish it wouldn't affect our house like that. I don't feel comfortable talking to the neighbors myself, but maybe H can do it. They moved in a few months ago, so I don't really know anything about them. Historically, our neighbors have been pretty mean to us - for instance, our next-door neighbors let their dog poop all over our lawn for months until H told them not to. Other neighbors dump trash onto our curb from their cars as they turn the corner, even as I stand out there in plain sight. They throw their McD's bag out and laugh and then I have to go clean up after them. I'm not good with confrontation, I just end up crying.
Anyway, I think I will simply not open those windows again. It just sucked because it was a cool night and I wanted to get some fresh air in for sleeping...instead it smelled like crap.
Last night may have been abnormally bad because of something like the wind strength or direction. I wouldnt just assume that every fire will invade your home. We have fires a lot on our property and never have this issue.
