Had surgery on Tuesday and everything went well. I have a plate with either 6 or 8 screws my mom couldn't remember what the dr said when he came to talk to her. I have really thin, small ankles so I may have to have my hardware removed in a year. I guess it can bother people who have smaller ankles. They gave me a nerve block that numbed me from my knee down and that was equally scary and amazing. Scary because I didn't know when it would wear off and I couldn't move my toes at all, I was nervous that it would last forever. But on the flip side, it kept the pain away for a good 13 hours. And then....
The pain set in. It was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt. I thought I was on top of my pain meds but clearly I wasn't. My mom took care of me post op and I'm glad she did, because I didn't want dh to see me like I was. I cried, full on sobbed it hurt so bad. My mom was amazing, she changed the ice every hour or so, she helped me go to the bathroom, gave me my medicine every 4 hours, and sat with me after I returned from the bathroom because it hurt so bad after being upright. She made me awesome, healthy food. She drank coffee with me and she took care of my puppy. I went home on Friday afternoon.
Fast forward to almost a week out of surgery. I'm feeling so much better. Still experiencing some pain but it doesn't touch what I had last week. I still can't weight bear for at least 5 more weeks. I'm getting a scooter... Soon I hope! I have a splint on now which is so heavy and hot (it was 90 yesterday and we don't have ac). I think I get a boot next week.
And I'm getting very bored sitting at home not doing much.
Not sure when I'll get back to some sort of workout but I assume one of the first activities I'll be able to do is swim! So that's good!
That sounds pretty rough. I'm glad that it is improving. So awesome that your mom could come help. I have been thinking of you. I was hoping that you would give us an update.
She's at my house right now cleaning my kitchen and telling me I should have returned my white fiestaware dishes ( that we got when we married) because they are all scratched up. She said I should have done it a long time ago. lol! Thanks mom!
Omg that sounds excruciating. I am so happy to hear you are feeling better now. Glad Mom was able to be there for you, gah that pain sounds terrible. hang in there and I hope you get to swim soon!
Was it uncomfortable when it was in? Irritating? How long did you have it in? How is it now without it?
So many questions!
Yes, it was uncomfortable and limited my range of motion (I had 20+ screws, 2 plates for a broken tibia and fibula x 2). It also hurt like a mothereffer if I ever accidentally banged a screw on something. They were also very visible in my case.
I had the hardware in for 11 months, and have had it out for about 4 years now. The removal was easy and I was back at the gym a week later. At my last xray about 2 years ago most of the holes in my bones had completely filled in. I still have pain sometimes, but its manageable. I have what I refer to as a perma-cankle, because the swelling never went away completely.
Im happy to answer any questions you have! I know how much it sucks, and I'm sorry you're dealing with this.
Gah! 20 screws and 2 plates! I shouldn't complain! I'm glad you are doing better. I'm sure I'll have more questions for you as I progress. Thanks!
Wow. That sounds really rough. I'm glad your surgery went well and that your feeling better. Rest up. I don't know if you like soccer, but the Women's World Cup is going on now. Might be nice entertainment.
No AC? Being in the south, the AC goes on in April and may not get turned off til Nov!
Most people don't have ac here. Dh and I have talked about getting sone sort of window unit. It gets pretty cool at night if all the windows are opened and you have a fan or 2.
