Time to gas up the frkls mobile!
And lol.
And yes... I've had family members who have been similar. And when they're 90, they just don't give any fucks anymore, if they ever did in the first place.
I don't care how old he is, I think he should be called out. Something like "you know, I know those types of things might not seem hurtful, and maybe you just think they're funny jokes, but they are actually incredibly racist and cruel. This is a bible study focusing on different religions of the world, so I have to ask you to be more sensitive in your future comments."
It's like their filter goes away with age. I am a realtor, and I was talking to a really old man last weekend and I mentioned the word "mortgage." He scolded me by saying "Little girl, I ain't never owed anybody no goddamn money." lol.
Frkls has to ignore them. But we don't have to ignore our racist grandparents. That's stupid. I had a racist grandfather, and presently have a racist GMIlL, so I get it, but honestly just throwing up your hands and letting them be offensive is really not an acceptable coping strategy. Seriously.

For me it is. My Grandma's dying and I'm not going to harp on her to change her mind at this point.
Calling people out isn't always and acceptable solution. She's doing what she can by trying to teach him about other religions and exposing him to new experiences. Yelling at him isn't going to do an damn thing.
I think it's unfair to the other people in the bible study class to have to listen to that crap. Yes, you should call him out, not to change his mind, but out of respect to the other people in the class.

holy shit! I can see you all sitting in a circle politely smiling and nodding while grimacing. How the hell does that just COME UP IN CONVERSATION?
I had someone tell me the other day that people who have mixed race children are screwing up their kids b.c. they won't know "what they are". I was all WHUT. And then casually mentioned that my nieces are biracial. He had the good sense to be embarrassed.
Do you guys not understand that frkls gets shit about her smelly garbage sitting at the curb? That there were special meetings because her husband ISN'T a creationist? Saying something to an elderly parishioner could cause her H to lose his job, and thus send frkls on the street.
Don't you think the other class members would say something if it was too much for them? I mean, I wish they would but really, I think that if one of them had a huge problem with it (and they should) they should be the ones to say "Look oldie. Shut it and stay at the home."
GFIL (he's dead now) flew airplanes for the Germans during WWII. Later, he spied on his neighbors for Stasi. His daughter (my MIL) ran away to African and married a muslim. It's hella difficult but if that guy can change, I think anyone can. I don't care how old you are.
