I am starting a book club with some friends here and we're meeting tomorrow to set the schedule and choose the books for the next 6 months. I asked each member to bring 3-4 suggestions and we'll go from there. Have you/your book club read any books recently that have sparked some great discussion?
My list right now (based on google, haven't read most): Bel Canto The Nightingale The Martian (reading now) I Know This Much Is True
I moved cross-country recently and used meetup to join a few random groups, including one book club. I kind of poached members from there and a few other groups I was in and floated it by them and so far we have 4 on board, and 2 more who want to get involved but can't make our first meeting tonight! The thing about meetup is it can be so full of people who come to something once, then don't come back... so I figured I'd make it a private thing and have real members who are committed rather than just posting online where people flake more.
It's taken me 9 months, so it's been slow going, but put yourself out there and make it happen
We had our meeting last night and it was split between Bel Canto and The Martian, so I flipped a coin and The Martian won! But I'm still going to read Bel Canto since many of you seemed to like it!
And we try to match our pot luck to the book, so the theme is potatoes! Haha
I did a while back and the groups that were available meet early during the week. I'm at work during those times. I should probably look again.
Does your library have any book discussion groups? I am interested in an IRL book club too, and the meetup one in my area ended up being not a great fit. I'm going to check out my library's but I'm not sure what to expect.
