I used an mens sport sock. My hair is long, fine with layers, it is a little hard with layers though. But I just pin the hell out of it. I use these www.sallybeauty.com/Magic-Grip-Hairpins/GOODHR1,default,pd.html
I have lots of layers and it's HARD. I couldn't get all the shorter pieces to stay in the "roll."
I eventually gave up and let the dog chew on the freshly cut sock.
I had this problem too and ended up putting the sock at the base of the ponytail, flipping the hair over it and around in a bun-like manner and pinning in place. A slightly different look but easier for me (I would spent 30 mins cursing my layers to stay in the "roll").
I'm a visual person and you should see me trying to actually try what you're describing here at my desk :-)
So, you put the sock at the base of the ponytail...but at the base of the longest hairs in the tail, or at the base of the shortest hairs and wrap around the long leftover ones?

There's no wrapping and rolling involved. Rather, you "fountain" your hair over the sock (at the base of the tail essentially on top of the rubber band holding the pony) so the the hair is over the sock. Then you do the normal bun procedure like your mom used to do when you were a kid, but without the twisting. You just gently move the ends around until they form a bun and pin. Does that make sense? I can't find a tutorial online
