It sounds like you live in an apartment. If you did nothing unusual, they likely need to snake the line and find the blockage, probably from another apartment that shares your plumbing and lower in the system. Sorry that sucks.
Were you at least able to get your massage rescheduled? How bad did it overflow? Like soaked hallway carpets? That sucks. And boo on the maintenance guy for being uppity about it.
And I gotta admit, I'm kinda surprised that some of you don't know where the shut off valve is. Not flaming, I swear. If (when?) something like this happens to those of you, look behind the toilet and you'll see a metal hose running from the bottom of the tank to a valve in the wall. Turn that valve knob to the right as far as you can and that will shut off the water flow.

Hey, on the bright side, this is at least one of the perks of apartment living. You don't have as much to deal with when it comes to getting things fixed and the carpeting replaced. Still not fun, though.
