We have two dogs a kid and white carpet, so I have a method.
1) Scoop as much of the solids as you can.
2) Blot, don't rub, to soak up moisture.
3) Treat. I use Woolsite Advanced Pet Stain & Odor Remover + Sanitize, blotted up with a white towel. (Sometimes I use an enzymatic cleaner - it depends on the type of stain.)
4) I fold a clean white towel and put it on top of the stain, weighted down with something heavy, to draw up more moisture.
We also have an upright carpet cleaner that we use regularly.
Finally, I can't speak to the health implications of this, but I've tried the trick on pinterest with ammonia and an iron and it works for stubborn stains.
Bissell little green carpet cleaner. I love that thing!
My mom used this for the kids and dogs and it was really awesome. I will buy one eventually but for now we just use water and soap and vinegar the old fashioned way.

I use my own concoction. I use like a third Cheer liquid laundry detergent mixed with two parts warm water and about a table spoon of baking soda dissolved in the mix. I clean up as much solid as I can and treat immediately. Spray scrub repeat.
I clean up any solids, soak up any liquids with paper towels, then saturate with Resolve spray, scrub, let sit. Then sprinkle liberally with baking soda and vacuum up when the area is dry. I don't know if it's the best method, but it's what I do.
I don't know why carpets exist. I use vinegar. I just recently rented a rug doctor after big dog got a UTI and the carpets look, feel and smell better.
We have some carpet in this house and it sucks. I miss the floors in my old house with tile and wood only.
We have an enormous amount of plain white washcloths that we buy in bulk at Costco. I use those to blot up as much moisture as possible. I then spray Rocco & Roxie cleaner from Amazon on it, let it sit for an hour, then blot up again.
If the stain isn't fresh then I rewet it with hot water in a squirt bottle, let it sit for 5 minutes, then do the process above.
We also shampoo the carpets at least once a month. We have a 15-year-dog that is semi-blind and semi-deaf and currently on prednisone, hence the maniacal carpet cleaning. He really doesn't have accidents on the carpet often, they just get funky.
