This sounds so stupid even as I'm typing it out, but this is what I'm upset about today, so bear with me.
I really, really want to bring home a cuckoo clock from Munich. (Usually I try and get 1 thing for the house from each country we visit.) H is really irritated that I want to try and bring home so big/bulky. Munich is the middle of our trip, so we'd have to haul it to London before heading home. I'm not a fan of shipping things home (I don't know why, but I'm not) so I'd really rather not ship the clock home.
H says that I'm being unreasonable and stubborn for wanting the clock, but I think he's being a fuddy duddy for not wanting the clock. I told him that I would carry it and be responsible for getting the clock home. I told him that we might not be going back to Munich ever again, and he thinks I'm being crazy.
This isn't the first time I've brought home something kind of large and fragile. It's worked out every other time that I've done it.
Before I answer, does your H carry your luggage in the airport? All, some, or none? Would he be helping you with your luggage if you had to take care of the clock?

Personally I would not want to lug a clock around London, but I love the idea of getting a special item from each country you visit. And a cuckoo clock seems like a perfect item from Germany. I wonder if there is some sort of locker or something you could rent at Heathrow so you could store it there and only deal with it on the flights?
Oh, and I think your H is wrong If you want to deal with carrying it around why should he try and stop you?

I agree with you though that I wouldn't ship it. We have an OLD grandfather clock that was my grandmother's (made in the 1700's) and my parents drove it out here from Ohio to avoid having to ship it and risk damage. Even carrying it inside from their van was a little hairy. On the bright side, if you need someone to professionally clean and service your cuckoo clock when you get it to Seattle, I have a great recommendation in Ballard.
And when is this said Munich trip? I REALLY want some Oktoberfest stuffs that I can't find in the US or order and ship from Germany and if someone happened to be going there and could buy it and ship it for me, I'd pay them for it!

Before I vote, uw: do you get irritable/grouchy when you are carrying heavy stuff? And, will you make your H carry or take care of any of your other luggage when you have the clock?
They make some rather small clocks. Not sure what size you are looking for but I got one there that was relatively small and easily fit in a suitcase.
yeah, can't you get a small one? this doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. also, if you get it from a larger store, wouldn't they be capable of professionally wrapping it for shipment? either way, I've very pro-souvenir, so I vote to get it!

Nope. I'm perfectly fine carrying my own luggage. The way we pack all of our stuff ends up co-mingled, so he does carry some of my stuff, but I also carry some of his stuff.
I have this down to a system. I move the extra stuff into a folding duffel that I pack, pack the fragile item in my suit case, then place the duffel on top and roll the whole thing.
I never ask for help when I struggle, but sometimes H does jump in without me asking. I'm used to traveling without him, esp since when I go for work I don't have anyone to help me.

I think grown ups should be abe to buy and carry anything they want and can afford.
Totes agree.
Especially if you are claiming responsibility of it and not putting him out at all. I am with you and would hate to have it shipped and then something happen to it. At that point you could have just bought it online in the first place. Not the same as buying it in person.
I personally found Munich to be not super exciting, but I'm glad I went. I remember that almost everything seemed to be closed on Sundays, so maybe plan to do a tour on those days. If you're doing Oktoberfest, then obviously all bets are off because I would assume things are open and it is a lot more fun than it was when we went. Have a blast!
aww this makes me so sad! we need to go together so I can show you the absolute awesomeness that is munich!!
