A little sweet stray pup showed up at my house last week. I posted on our area page and found the owner. 2 days later, he's back. I message the owner and let them know I had the dog again. I also asked if he had a collar. They said they do, but their kids keep taking it off. They said he has also started running since their denial dog has been in heat and they took her to one of their parents.
Okay, fine. Here's your dog. Take care of him.
Now a week later, he's back. I'm pissed. He is the sweetest little thing. I would totally keep him but have 2 dogs already and really don't need another, although this little guys is so sweet I could be persuaded. He is snuggled up with me now. I messaged them again but it's late.
Wtf do I do? This is total bullshit. 3 times in a week. No collar any of the times. We have a no kill shelter but I don't want to take him there.
I'm tempted to get him back tell them this is their last time before I either keep him take him to the shelter.
I don't know if a shelter will take him since he has a family. You can take him to animal control and let them know the situation. They usually call the family and issue a small fine when someone picks up the dog. If it happens multiple times they can rehome the dog.
Taking him to the shelter seems like punishment for the dog (and a waste of resources for the shelter). If you "keep" the dog, wouldn't they come looking for him before long? You can't really call "My dog now!" I don't think there is anything you can do to make them better care takers and the dog less escapist - maybe your home is just too hard to resist!
We were in the same position as you. We wound up catching the dog need day and calling animal control. They picked her up and fined the owners. I felt bad about it but we were so fed up. In the 10 months since we called animal control I've seen her once, and it was one of the coldest days of the winter with a foot and a half of snow on the ground. I wasn't going to take b out in that weather so I had no choice but to call animal control again. (I coundnt call the dog inside since my dog was recovering from surgery.)
Given that they let their other dog go into heat and are likely backyard breeders and given that this dog seems to love you, I would be very tempted to keep him, even if it wasn't entirely legal.
He came and got him. He was extremely grateful and apologetic. He said he doesn't know why he keeps running and that his kids will go in and out of the house and not pay attention.....which I totally get. However-talk to them.
He said he wondered why he keeps coming here and I said, he must like us the reality is I'd rather him come here than go the other direction since the highway isn't but 4 blocks away. So he's home for now.

If you're up to it, maybe ask the dad if he'd like you to keep him over night, if it happens again. Maybe a night of worrying about poor little Rex, lost outside, will help them remember to watch for him as they go in and out the door.

Me thinks a couple of hours walking the neighborhood looking for the puppy might improve their attention. I'm assuming if they are old enough to come and go like that they are old enough to walk the neighborhood looking. Not getting to do whatever fun/normal activities looking for the dog would make an impression that might stick.

This happened to me. The third time, I called Animal Control. I explained that this was the third time I'd picked this dog up in a month. They picked up the dog from me and took it to its home a block away and fined the owners. I've never seen him loose since. Their explanation was that their 11-year-old kept leaving the gate unlatched. I will never understand how people can be so careless. Dogs are in such danger when they're out loose like this.
No kidding, if that dog comes back, you need to keep it.
