How old are the kids? Nola in August is miserable but I assume Houston might be too.
We do the zoo, aquarium, insectarium, city park, and if you have a full day to devote (it's a decent drive from NOLA)- I recommend the Golbal Wildlife Center in Folsom. We haven't been there with kids, but the adults love it. We did the private tour and fed the animals. Kids would love it! Since you have grandparents, someone could always take the kid/kids back to the hotel if someone was hot/tired/etc.
We rented a house last year when we went and had a great time but NOLA is a city we frequently visit so we were aware how to get around without needing to be near the quarter.
I did new Orleans with a 3 year old. It was super fun. The markets, the food, the little tram that goes around the city. They have the worlds most amazinggggggg childrens museum.

We were there last summer when DS was 4 and C was 10 weeks old. Our favorite activities were the aquarium and the children's museum. We stayed in a hotel with an indoor pool which was fun. We also loved riding the trolley through the garden district in the evening to go get ice cream.
Are all beach towns out? I love Port Aransas as a family vacation spot.
You have been to San Antonio but what what about staying at the Hyatt Hill Country resort there? We spent 3 nights there last summer, didn't leave once and had a blast.

It's only about an hour away. They could go straight across the Causeway...easy drive.

We have a tram that goes around the city?? Do you mean the streetcar? It goes up and down the same street, lol. The one on St. Charles is quite scenic, though!
No! That little train thing by the water. LOL. DS rode that all up and down.
If you definetly want to do the zoo, aquarium and insectarium, it may benefit you to look into becoming members of the Audubon Institute. Tickets to each attraction are not cheap and your oldest would also need a ticket. I'm not 100% sure but it looks like you could purchase the "Family Plus" and have one IL use the guest pass and the other use the two day admission tickets and that could save you around $90 or you could purchase the "Family" and "Senior Plus" (assuming they are over 65) and save around $50. It only really works if you plan to do all 3 though.
namasteak what is there to do at Port Aransas? My ILs aren't really in to hanging out on the beach beyond eating near the water or dipping their toes in the water.
We tend to have super high expectations for beaches too. When I lived in Jamaica I thought the beaches were merely ok. .
Oh it's definitely a lazy hang out at the beach town so probably not a great choice for you.
I had no idea there was an amazing children's museum. I'll have to add that to the list for the next visit.
We did buy a combo zoo/aquarium pass last time we were there. Saved a few bucks.
cajunmom thanks for the clarification. It's been several years since we went to the Global wildlife center and I think we missed an exit, which likely made it a longer trip
