I just received this email from the director of DS's center:
We have just confirmed a case of lice in the Pre-K 4 classroom. The child has been sent home to treat. We have checked the children's hair in the Pre-k 4 class and have NOT found any evidence of lice on any other children. We will be washing and sanitizing everything in the classrooms.
Relevant info: I am off for the summer and DS is only there on Tues/Thurs currently. He is17 months and doesn't have tons of hair. My first reaction was to drive back and get him, but if I pull him, for how long? He isn't in the same classroom as the one with lice. He is often in the 18-24 mo old room and will be moving up soon. There are lots of siblings at this daycare so while he is not in close proximity to the classroom in question, it's not like he's "safe" from getting lice.
Ugh. I don't want to be completely reactionary and I know that lice are basically harmless, but I also want to avoid having to deal with lice in my house!!!!
Leave him. Contrary to popular belief, lice really only spread from direct head-to-head contact. If he's not in the same class as the affected child, the chances of him getting lice are minuscule.
Leave him. It's not his classroom, he doesn't have long hair. Chances are pretty slim he will get it. Even if he does get it, I promise you it is not a huge deal (says the mom whose 5 year old had it and gave it to her, but not the sister she shares a brush with, ugh).
If you are really concerned buy the fairy tales lice repelling shampoo, conditioner, and conditioning spray (that seems to be why one of my girls got it but not the other despite sharing a brush).

Thank you for being the voice of reason. We had multiple lice cases at school this year that were brought with visitors from another country and passed on to their hosts so it was a big deal, but I guess Im letting the stress of the PR disaster that that was cloud my reasoning.
leave him and start using a tea tree shampoo as a preventative measure.
We use Eco Kid Prevent. Lice have gone through my boys' daycare and school multiple times but they only had it the first time (before we started using this shampoo)
I am super paranoid about lice, but I would leave him.
I was hoping you would weigh in! I'm leaving him. I'm glad be use I've got tons that I want to get done, but I will head out to Target and pick up some lice shampoo.

We use the Fairy Tales brand and the leave-in spray. So far, so good since we got rid of our only lice issue back in December.
