We have an '03 Civic Hybrid that I'm afraid is shitting the bed. We've had it in twice this year for various things. Last time we had an oil change was in March and they said then that the oil was pretty low but they changed it, took a look at the rest of the engine, and said everything looked good. Now I know I'm 2 months past due for the next oil change, but WAY under the recommend mileage between oil changes. It has been having some issues lately, and today I almost couldn't drive it home from work. Get home and check the oil to find out it is bone dry. Understandably I should have had it changed in June, but it shouldn't be dry yet, right?? I haven't noticed any leaks, and if it was a more serious problem I would have thought Honda would have noticed it in March?
Anyway, I'm thinking we may need to start looking for a new (to us) car. We'd like a sedan or hatchback type, but we'd like something slightly larger than our Civic. Right now with two car seats we can't have a third person in the back so we'd like to have that option. And of course we'd like good gas mileage (knowing we probably won't get what the hybrid gets).

I need to add, because I'm kind of annoyed at Honda (maybe unfairly but I feel like they should have caught this) but shouldn't our oil light come on if it gets that low?
I have a Subaru outback wagon, but when we were car shopping we also looked into the Legacy sedan and were really impressed with the gas mileage, considering it's also AWD.
I wouldn't recommend a Mazda. A few years ago h used to have a new to him 04 Mazda wagon with 40k miles on it and it blew a head gasket on the freeway. We got rid of the car in 08 after and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. A close friend of mine had the exact same situation happen to his Mazda.
On the flip side, I'm still driving my crappy 99 corolla and that thing is going strong. I have 164k miles on it and it's not showing any signs of death. When it's time to replace my car I'd probably get another toyota.

UW - our other car is a Toyota (4Runner) and I love that thing. It too is an '03 and we haven't had a single problem with it. We'll probably run that into the ground.
i'm very pro-toyota. i don't have one currently (i used to have a 4runner, but somebody else totaled it for me while it was parked....270k miles!)..but i know toyota has a good track record.
i have a mazda6 hatch right now, and while i love the functionality of it, it consistently has small issues that was a manufacturing issue. we went back under warranty pretty much once every few months for a few years..until our warranty expired. it runs fine, but it has a computer glitch that sets off the check engine light, which causes us to fail emissions. so it's super lame. but i love the way it drives and it's size. it holds a LOT in the trunk.

I love Subarus. I'm in love with our Forester, but my MIL has a Legacy and loves it. Gets good gas mileage, and is almost maintenance-free. Plus, they're a dream to drive.
