about 6mo ago Chase notified us that they felt we had a fraudulent charge and closed down our account (joint checking that we both have check cards we use tied to it).
today I saw that our account was overdrawn - went online and saw 2 charges for just under $200 each, in NYC (we live in NJ so NYC isn't that odd, but neither of us have been recently)...
Called and filed fraud, etc - closed the account, all that.
I've used credit cards/debit cards online for like 10+ years for things and have never had problems until this year... not sure if it's online related or what- but just putting that out there (since I do most shopping online).
Now- what steps do I need to take? I want to make sure i'm not forgetting anything - want to make sure I have all my bases covered to avoid this again, or worse. TIA!
You can file a police report. I haven't done it the 2 times my credit card has been compromised. DH did the time his was compromised and the culprit was clearly a local vendor. He rarely used his checking account card - the fraud happened shortly after a visit to a McDonalds that was using a second card scanner.
Have you noticed any trends in the fraudulent transactions? Do they try $1 or $2 test charges first? Can you identify any vendors you used shortly before the first and second fraud issues?
Is there a reason you don't have a Chase credit card? Only, if this happened with a credit card, you wouldn't have to close the account. Just get a new credit card number issued. Also, your checking account wouldn't get overdrawn. I would imagine that would be easier for automatic bill pay purposes and such.

sorry- i didn't explain it right... we didn't have to close the account- just had to get a new card/card number for the account.
The refunded the money right away and refunded the overdraft fees, too... so that wasn't an issue.
I used to use the Paypal credit card generator- LOVED that b/c I didn't have to use my real card number, but it still came out of my checking account... but they stopped offering that service. I'll have to look into a bank that has that service- i didn't know any did!
I had fraud charges on my Citi M/C a while back. I do a lot of online shopping as well and now use the one-time 'virtual account number' program they offer--like the PP mentioned.
