Do you pay before or after you leave? I've always boarded my dog and just paid when picking up the dog. I assume you do before as I'm just going to have her leave the key under her mat the last time she checks on the dog but it's weird giving someone a fairly big chunk of change before the job is even performed. I know, I'm way overthinking.

Whenver I've dog sat, I've always found the cash on the counter when I arrive. This goes for both family and neighbors I've worked for. Is she staying at your house or what's the situation? They always leave me food too.

She lives locally so just popping in 3xs a day to let him out/play/feed. Not staying there overnight or anything.

I like the half now/half later deal but isn't it super inconsiderate to make her come back to my house after watching it for two weeks to get her money? It's not like she lives far but it feels kind of weird to me. Or is it not weird and I'm making it that way?
I would pay when I returned absent any money that needs to be fronted for food/supplies and/or if there is an agreed upon deposit. It's like any other service. Pay upon completion. Unless it's a friendly/casual relationship less businesslike.

I think half and half is just kind of awkward. Like here's your payment, but I don't trust you enough to not fuck up so I'll give you half later if my pets still alive.

How is it any different than just paying her entirely after? Honestly, I'm a fan of paying in advance, but if you're uncomfortable for some reason then I'd just deliver it after the fact.

You're leaving for 2 weeks and your dog will only get to go out and see someone 3x day for that entire time? That sounds awful Is there a reason you didn't find a sitter to stay at your house or just board the dog somewhere it would get more attention?

You actually think that at a boarders they take the dog out of their kennel and give them 1:1 attention for hours a day everyday? I have no family capable of moving to my house for two weeks and I've never heard of a paid sitter doing that.

I guess that's what I did as a paid sitter and the kennels here that I've used let the dogs out in runs during the day with supervision or into a shared run after the dogs have gotten to know each other. They go into cages only overnight. Crabby dogs stay in a smaller quiet room with couches off the main office or in the living space.

The boarder we use when we have to has the dogs out of their kennels in a play area/outside for the majority of their days, yes. Maybe no 1:1 attention, but also not in a kennel for 2 weeks, getting human and other dog interaction. Sitting alone for two weeks sounds horrible. Board them in a good place, or hire a housesitter.

House sitters start at $80 a day here so when I can add an extra $1100 to my vacation budget I'll get right on that.
Our boarder we use operates similarly where there is a play area and then the dogs come in at night to kennels. However we also have a 1/4 acre fenced yard with a dog door where he can come and go as he pleases while running around chasing and wrestling with our insane cat. He's timid around other dogs and would much prefer two hours a day of 1:1 attention/exercise from a person and getting to spend the day napping on his favorite chair the rest of the time vs sleeping in a kennel. Or I think anyway--if he seems stressed we will reassess for our next trip.
I'm fairly certain a house sitter would feed and water your pet.
Yea, keep him alive but id rather have someone take him for multiple walks, play fetch. The pet sitter is a vet tech by trade so could accurately gauge if the dog or cat needed medical attention. Also if I'm asking someone who is house sitting to add that to what they do I'm sure I'm going to be seeing prices a whole lot higher than $80 a day. Do you think that's a luxury most middle class families can afford?

Well considering you're taking a two week vacation I'm going to try not to judge. Of course not. It's expensive, and I'd personally be fine with your arrangement for a weekend, but 2 weeks seems like a very long time to leave your pet basically alone.

See, 2 weeks is what gets me. "you" can afford a two week getaway as long as you leave your dog alone, means you can't afford a 2 week vacation. If it were one week, it wouldn't be so bad for the poor pup.
Someone asked me yesterday when we were getting a dog. Never. This is why. Until I have an extra grand for my pet while I'm on vacation.
FWIW, in KC's situation, it doesn't sound like a huge deal if the dog's temperament is right. I could see some dogs not being okay with it and some that would be.
Also, 2 weeks of vacation doesn't necessarily mean $$$ for the trip.

Because I'm sure a pet can accurately gauge the difference between 7 and 14 days.
I don't get how a dog having someone coming to them every 4 hours is somehow "alone". I'd rather him actually be getting attention and exercise than just having a human here overnight that's at a job for 9-10 hours. I guarantee he will get just as much attention than when we are home because we don't always play with him for 2+ hours with other things going on. It's an older dog who plays for a bit and then sleeps on his favorite chair most of the day. I'm not getting the poor dog spiel here.

It may be worthwhile looking into the costs of having someone stay there. You could look at www.rover.com or www.fetch.com. We live in a HCOL area and pay $40/night for a special needs dog, a cat and a fish. I'd think it could be close to as expensive to have someone come in every 4 hours (so at least 4 times a day to cover 12 hours?)
Regarding paying, we usually go through a service and we pay them up front but they release the money to the sitter once we're home and have had time to make sure everything looks good.

Awesome site, thanks for sharing! We are getting a steal of a rate as the sitter lives two streets down from us but $40 is still doable. I did see a lot in the $40 range that had multiple reviews but it was more they wanted the dog to come to their house and they had other dogs. I will have to do some further research though.
