With the huge success of "Jurassic World" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" as well as the upcoming release of "Terminator Genisys" the multiplexes are starting to look like a blast from the past.
The reign of 1980s and 1990s films over 2015 isn't likely to end anytime soon.
29 years after "Top Gun" was released in 1986 and turned Tom Cruise into a movie star, a sequel has been long in the works. Now, fans of the military action thriller will soon be able to see Cruise as Maverick one more time.
According to The Daily Mail, Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed a sequel script as well as the return of Cruise at a press junket in Berlin.
"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," Ellison confirmed. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."
Details are scarce on the plot and whether or not Kelly McGillis will return alongside Cruise. All that is known is that the sequel will be set in the modern day and be a commentary on today's military, rather than a repeat of the original.
"It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today." Ellison added.
The "Top Gun" sequel has been in the works for a long time. Last year, it was announced Tom Cruise would reprise his role as Maverick. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed the late "Top Gun" director Tony Scott was the one who came up with the premise.
Still, Scott's classic lives on.
"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick." Ellison told The Daily Mail.

Well they never outright said they were going up against the Russians in the first one, but amazingly enough that wouldn't be a crazy continuation story.
With that said, I think this is a terrible idea. Mav is probably a drone pilot now.
H will be pleased. And I'm pleased on his behalf; it will be nice to have some new material after being subjected to his love of Top Gun and Red Dawn (original, of course) all these years.

FTFY.
Just no, Tom. No. Give it a rest. People have figured out your crazy and even giving them Top Gun isn't going to get them back.

I will go see this on opening night and not even be ashamed. Tom Cruise in Top Gun was my first crush. I even got on a roller coaster at King's Island because it was called Top Gun. And I hate roller coasters.

I keep reading this as Tim Cruise which makes me think of a really irritating boat captain who wears a lot of shoes without socks. YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO CATCH THE BAD GUYS, TIM. YOU CANNOT RUN IN THOSE THINGS.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
I will go with horrified. I am sure son-in-law will be excited as heck. Danger Zone is his theme song and this is his theme movie. XH too. Stupid navy airplane people.
I want Val Kilmer to get back into shape and come back as Iceman. Tom Cruise is/was an ass. Val Kilmer is/was cool. But I will struggle to refrain from seeing it, since I really dislike Tom Cruise. Like his movies, but not him. Damn. I don't want to give him any more of my money, but sometimes I am weak.
Ohmigod, Kiddo just asked "Aren't they, like, old people now?" and she's double-checking my punctuation, to boot. I have created a devil-child.
I'm curious how they are going to do this. Will it be realistic? Someone Tom's age isn't exactly flying balls to the wall anymore. Top Gun itself is now in Fallon, NV - a dusty town that isn't nearly as romantic or interesting as San Diego. Tomcats are long retired. So are we going to hage a hornet top gun based out of Nevada? Is Tom an instructor? Even Top Gun instructors are like early 30s.
I'm just curious how they are going to cast a 55 year old man in the jet community. My husband is 34 and is one of the older guys still flying operationally. 40 is the ceiling for most Navy squadrons (the age of the Commanding Officer).

Oh the magic of ageless Hollywood.
At least if you are a man, right?
Yes. Sorry. Oh the magic of ageless Tom Cruise. He does look amazing for 55.
I'm glad I'm not alone. LOVED the original. Saw it many times. But it's been almost 30 years. I .... just ... really? It feels "too little, too late". Today's Tom Cruise is NOT the Tom Cruise of the original. And I'm not talking about his age.
