I'm in desperate need of a new winter coat. I wanted to replace my wool coat last year (that's from 2005) but couldn't find something I felt was warm enough.
I'm looking at J Crew's coats. I'm considering the peacoat (majesty or factory). Does anyone have a stadium cloth, double cloth, or thinsulate coat? Do you think I need any of these fabrications specifically for winter in Chicago? For reference, my first winter in Chicago (2010/11 - snowpocalypse) I wore my down coat maybe 6 times.
ps. Sorry to bring up the cold weather talk in Aug.

I have the Majesty coat from last year (stadium cloth I believe) and it was warm enough (although, we had a fairly mild winter last year). However, the buttons kept falling off. It happened once after only a week of wear so I sent it back and they sent me a new one and it happened a second time! I was really frustrated. It's an easy fix but still frustrating none the less.

this! I have 3 j crew coats and within 3 wears of all of them, the buttons fell off. I think that is completely unacceptable!
I have the thinsulate double-cloth coat. I don't wear a coat in the car or running in and out of places, but if I'm going to be outside for more than 5 minutes in the cold, worth having the thinsulate (and I'm only in St. Louis. Go Cards).

That's ridiculous about the buttons!
I get hot fairly easily (hence the lack of use of my down coat)... But, all of the "wool" coats I tried last year felt way too thin. The one I'm replacing had a layer of batting which I think helped.
