I am working with a third party to temporarily place a physician. The physician has not completed the appropriate paperwork and is supposed to start on Monday. It is the recruiters responsibility to make sure the physician completes this. We are paying the third party, not the physician. I reached out to the recruiter yesterday and received no response. I called again this morning and left a voicemail. Then I called the only other contact I have for the company and left him a voicemail as well.
I get a text from the recruiter saying, "Can't talk now what's up." It set me over the edge. Who talks to a client like that? I had called his office phone, but he has it set to roll over to his cell phone apparently. I texted back that I need him or someone to contact me ASAP regarding the physician. He then told me to call the other person I had already contacted and they would help me. I wrote back that I had already done that and I need someone to get in touch with me now.
About 5 minutes later the other contact called me. The recruiter's mom died last night. I feel horrible for being so bitchy and demanding back to him. Ugh.

You couldn't have possibly known, and you tried beforehand to get in touch with the other party. Fwiw, the initial text response you got is an automated option for iPhone users to send when they decline a call, it's a shortcut option so they don't have to type it all out. So he probably didn't intend to sound as cold or informal as how it came across.
IMO, this is why I appreciate vague "family emergency" responses, so I can let things be and worked around the individual. Otherwise they're bound to get nagged.
