Ours sits on the entertainment center below the TV, which is where our Wii, bluray, DVD carousel, and CD carousels sit as well. We really should consolidate better.
We have ours on a bookshelf. I cut a hole in the back for cords. It's right below, but it's off the ground, there is a space between the floor and the bottom shelf, because it's also in front of a return.
Our coat closet is right behind the wall that our tv is on, so we converted it to a media closet and use an IR repeater that we attached to the tv. We had an outlet moved behind the tv, had one installed in the closet, and all cords can feed through the wall so there is nothing visible.
We can't hide our stuff because you have to be pointing at the box for the cable to register any changes. Annoying.
I've been looking at this, and you can get remote extenders or something where you don't need to be in line of sight.
Interesting! I'll have to keep that in mind when A is mobile. We can hardly get the damn remotes to work pointing it at the box but it probably just needs new batteries lol.
We have this TV stand (we also mounted our TV and had the same issue) and we put a basket on the bottom shelf where our modem and cords sit...you could set a cable box on there, too.

We did this in our old house. I loved everything was totally out of sight. We don't have a closest handy in our current house, so DH ran the wires behind the drywall with boxes behind the TV and behind our media console.

This is what we did too. Logitech Harmony remote system. Our TV just floats on the wall with no wires, cords or boxes. The components are on a shelf in the closet.
