dS1 went through a brief phase of that. It didn't last long when he realized how serious it was. (I told him we couldn't drive places if he didn't stay buckled.)
When I asked for strategies, a few people suggested flipping the buckle around.
DS did this a few months ago. I thought the first time was just luck. Then he did it again.
I cut off the foot part of one of DH's socks, so it's just the part that fits over the ankle (kind of looks like a wrist sweat band now). I put the chest clip through this loop of material. I'm sure he'd still be able to open it if he pushed the material aside, but when it's covered, it seems to be out of sight, out of mind.
We went through this phase too. It sucks. People here suggested putting a sock over the buckle (I'm not sure exactly how that works). We went with the approach that we pulled over and stopped the car every.single.time she unbuckled it. It's a pain in the ass, but that, and time, finally got her to stop.
DD did that a couple times but I flipped out and I think she got the idea that it was dangerous. May not be the best way to go, but acting scared worked for me, lol.

DS was doing this a few months ago. The sock trick didn't work (he just pulled the sock aside to access the clip) so I bought a replacement clip with a different style of buckle. It was from Walmart and like $3. I'll see if I can find a link. Problem solved because he can't unclip the new buckle.
DS did that a handful of times. I flipped out on him, said it was unsafe and he could get really hurt or even die. His great grandparents just died, so the concept is very fresh in his mind. I know that's melodramatic, but it's the best way to get through to him the gravity of the situation. I only use that tactic for car seats, holding hands in parking lots, and eating wild plants (we have a lot on our property).
According to a car tech friend of mine, it isn't an emergency as long as the arms remain inside the straps. Just find a safe place to pull over and matter of factly say "We keep our seat belts on," click it, and hop back in the car. Rinse. Repeat.
Ok she is definitely doing this. I had to pull over today to fix it. She unclipped and kept saying uh oh until I pulled over. So she knows she is not supposed to do it. Then after I clipped it back she said 'dangerous'. So can someone show me a pic of this sock thing? I don't want to traumatize her, but this is scary as hell for me especially since I have been rear ended twice (thankfully she wasn't in the car either time).
This wasn't taken to show the sock, but you should see enough of it to get the idea. The foot part was cut off of the sock, so it's just the tube part that goes on the ankle/calf. It kind of looks like a wrist sweat band.
I just place the chest clip through the loop. As I mentioned before, DS could probably figure out how to push it aside and unclip it, but he hasn't bothered with it ever since. Out of sight, out of mind?
@fivedogs , have I been doing this right? Still safe?
