Apparently Volvo is all about inventing awesome car seats. I am proud of Volvo that they support kids being RF until 3-4. But I guess that is common in Sweden right? I love the interrogated boosters too. I am also not sure what happens when the child outgrows the infant seat. Maybe there is a larger seat replacement? The infant seat swivels too. The cupholder is heated to keep bottle warm
That's awesome. But really I'd be happy if car makers just provided regular old car seats in the back seat that were designed for that car, with no room for errors in installation.
The kid is in the front of the car? How is that safer than rearfacing in the backseat?
I don't think there is any difference between the safety of the front seat vs. the back minus airbag issues. I assume this doesn't have airbags in the front passenger area. I think the safety comes from the parent being able to attend to the kids needs better.
I think it's awesome. Since I'm driving more often by myself with DS, I would love it if he could be up front with me. Ok Volvo, make this for the US! Like in the next month, so I can trade my car in before my last baby arrives.
Can't mom just sit in the back next to the car seat? I mean, this looks neat but aside from the bottle warmer I don't see the advantage over current arrangements.
To be clear, the car isn't designed for people who drive themselves So Two parents may be in the back seat and baby would be in the front.
Semi-related but I was talking to my Grannie about how she drove her kids around. They had a car with bench seats. No car seat. So she would just lay the babies on the seat next to her. I can't imagine having a rolly baby on the seat next to me while I'm trying to drive. Then again, looking in his backseat mirror, giving him the paci or a toy, etc. are all pretty distracting too.
Yeah my mom said she drove around with my older sisters when they were babies in the front seat and it was so much easier. I was her third baby and the first one to have a car seat as an infant.
I miss the days when I could ignore my backseat baby. Now it's a constant stream of talking and I feel pressured to respond.
We're in a cave, I see two cows, I want a popsicle, I no like any girls...
Same here. 3.5 month old DD is completely silent in the car, since she usually falls asleep. 3.5 year old DS is a CONSTANT talking stream of consciousness. "Mommy look, a dump truck! Where it going? It haul dirt? Or rocks? Which one it haul? Mommy? MOMMY WHICH ONE?"
Just so y'all know, this will never happen in the US. Ever.
(H works in vehicle crash safety. Not happening.)
That said, super cool and I'd love that.
Why not? I'm genuinely curious.
Something mumbly about airbag rules and US regulations. He's surprised it's legal anywhere and thinks it's just a concept, rather than something they actually intend to do anytime soon. I'll see if I can get more details, but (as you might expect) he's not going to be super committal because of the minefield this kind of topic can be.

I've asked about this. It's a "no" because of liability issues. Backless boosters maybe, but those are already cheap and easy.
I think the infant seat looks cool but the woman in the back seat looks pretty uncomfortable. No room to stretch your legs really.
It's no different than a RFing infant seat in a regular car IMHO. In any sedan I've put an infant seat in, the vehicle seat in front can't be all the way back. Prior to my minivan I had a Prius. DD was in an infant seat behind the passenger seat. The passenger seat couldn't be all the way back, it was at least 2 clicks forward. I remember that b/c my dad complained EVERY TIME he rode in my car. Mumble mumble "dashboard in my knees.." mumble.

The XC90 isn't designed for people who drive themselves? It's like a $50k+ vehicle?
I assumed the driver was the dad dressed for a formal evening out, based on what the mother's gown. Or maybe it's cold in Sweden.
They do talk about this as something that will be more important as autonomous cars become more of a thing, so in that sense, yes, not for people who drive themselves

My grandma bragged to me that she would nurse my uncle while driving and smoking while my dad 16 who is months older than my uncle was loose on the front bench seat. No wonder she thought I was crazy when I talked about a rear facing car seat until 3.

Ha the other article i read said it is for a chauffeur situation lol.

Ha, I have a prius now and I can stretch my legs out farther than it seems she can.
but its a pretty moot issue either way lol.
One of the articles said it was designed with more leg room than the older versions. Also she is probably 6ft all legs. But what do i know stretching my legs is a foreign concept in my 98 corolla
I don't really understand. I can disable the passenger's side airbag in my car. Does that mean that M could safely ride in the carseat in the passenger's seat?

Yes. With one caveat that the back of the car is safer in general because that area gets hit statistically less .

So I guess I don't understand the appeal of a carseat in the front. Easier access, but less safe and more distracting?

I think the more distracting thing depends on the parent. Like some it is more distracting to have kid in back. I don't really know if it is less safe, like...i think the statistical difference is very very small. It isn't like your child is doomed in the front seat, well no more than you are.

I feel like a mom would be more likely to pay attention to baby than the road if the baby is fussing. I mean, if a cell phone is a distraction while driving, so is a kid screaming that you're trying to pacify.
Unless that seat is replaceable with a normal seat, I feel like it's a waste of space.
I see what you mean, but for me I think it would be less distracting because I wouldn't be contorting my body at stop lights to reach back and give DS stuff, like I do now!
