This is my life right now so forgive me. TMI alert.
DS has been pooping 8-9 times a day lately. Sometimes it's normal mushy poop, sometimes it's more liquidy. We've been giving him mild foods to try and help but so far it hasn't done much. I took him to the pedi yesterday for his diaper rash but she wasn't too concerned about the poop. My H is all spun up about it though and wants to take him back in. Even the daycare director has spoken to us about it - she's concerned it's some kind of virus.
In your experience is this normal? Could this be molars? A virus? He's otherwise happy and healthy and gaining weight.

Is he eating a lot of fruit lately? I've noticed an increase with L lately too (3-4 times/day vs. 1-2). I attribute it to copious amounts of cherries and watermelon he has been eating. 8-9 times does seem like a lot though. I might check in with the doctor if it continues.
bananapancakes He hadn't been eating an abundance of fruit, but we dialed way back in the past couple of days. He started WCM last week but the poop predates that.
Thing is, fruit, oatmeal, and greens are only gonna encourage the digestive system to "flow". What you want is to stop it up a bit to see if that makes a difference. So, dairy, simple carbs (besides oatmeal)- anything iron enriched, and maybe applesauce (not juice! Applesauce has pectic which is binding ) will help that happen.
If that doesn't make a big change in like 24 hours I'd look at cutting dairy (sorry!) and maybe go get pedialyte? For dehydration prevention. I forget how young you can use that tho.
At that age DD went upto 5x/day of all different consistencies. However when we started WCM, it became blow-out proportions and rashy. How many times a day was he before the 8 - 9? Honestly if DD had ever consistently reached 8 - 9, I would've taken her for a second opinion.
I will say that L's poops have increased recently - I figured a combination of teething and dropping formula for all solids and WCM. She used to poop only once a day; now it's more like 3-4. So, depending on how often he was pooping before, I could see where this might be his digestive system adjusting.
My knee-jerk reaction is that it seems a bit much, so I would keep in touch with the pedi.
Ditto everyone else. But a few other thoughts based on my experience. When Ds was about 17 months, he started having a lot of diarrhea and also threw up too. Then the weight loss started. We got a lot of "it must be a virus" from the pedi because we had gone to Mexico the month before.
Long story short - I pushed for allergy testing and from that, we discovered he has celiac.
So - just keep an eye on everything including weight loss. And if it doesn't clear up/ pedi doesn't seem concerned, push for answers.
It's been 5 years and this topic still angers me. Needless to say, we left that pedi after his diagnosis.
Hopefully it's nothing serious but don't be afraid to push if it doesn't get better.
From 12 months to 17 months DD popped between 4-8x per day. They were never watery though, but often "looser" than ploppable. Average was 4-6x. I'd be concerned if it was more than 8 regularly, especially watery.

DD pooped that much when she was suffering from a cows milk protein intolerance at about 2-4 months old. It was also watery and bloody. Her symptoms cleared up and she tolerates milk in my diet totally fine now, but the frequency and diarrhea came back when we gave her dairy directly recently. CMPI is less common at a year old, but it definitely can last that long. If you upped her cows milk intake recently, you could try cutting or reducing it for a while.
I had trouble finding any sources that said it was a problem or abnormal for a baby to poop so much. But I also could hardly find anyone on the Internet with a healthy baby who experienced poop that frequently.

DS is 18 months and it's not uncommon for him to go 6-7 times a day - twice before we leave for daycare. We talked to the pedi about it a couple of times but he's happy and gaining weight. It's the new normal for us.
Thanks everyone. Apparently we misheard daycare yesterday - he only pooped there twice so looks like he's down to 5-6x every 24 hours. He's gaining weight like crazy now so I'm not overly concerned about allergies yet. We are still taking a wait-and-see approach at this point. If it goes back up today we will get him back to the pedi.
I'm going to need my next kid to STTN at a young age and have 1-2 poops a week.
