I called USAA to add an umbrella policy to our insurance and the rep asked me what prompted my call. I told him a finance chat board posting on insurance, but then he wanted to know more about it. He was actually looking for the board. Oops!
The first rule of GBCN is you do not talk about GBCN.
The second rule of GBCN is you DO NOT TALK ABOUT GBCN.
Kidding, obviously. I actually sent the link to a friend who said she wanted to learn more about budgets and retirement options. I think MM gives out better advice than randomly trolling Google.

LOL, love this!
I told a friend about the board and she would be a good fit here IMO. She thought it was super cool that I met people from the board IRL ::cough cough Mrs.Beagle:: and she is interested in personal finance from the perspective of retirement and getting out from under her law school loans. However, I felt it would be a little too "worlds collide" for me if I linked her site and she actually joined and became active.
"Sorry, it's a private group." We don't need salespeople finding us.
I don't imagine USAA will be posting promos on here. I imagine they want to look for comments people might be making about USAA.
Hey, USAA, in case you're reading this: I LOVE YOU! (Also, will my valuable property rider cover re-stringing my pearls since I accidentally slept in them and broke the strand?)
s/o USAA, what are the qualifiers to use their service? Do I or my spouse have to be military or vets, or does it extend beyond that? Like if my father is a veteran? I keep hearing great things about them, but can't seem to find info on whether I'd qualify to be a member.

Parent or grandparent.
ETA: I believe they have to be members though. For instance, my dad won't join USAA even though he served and because of that I haven't been able to join.

Ha, I sent the sump pump insurance info to my neighbors, and did some fancy footwork about, "I was looking up something and ran across this info on a message board..."

Parent - yes; grandparent - no.
Anyone is is in the military or had an honorable discharge is eligible, and children/spouses of members are eligible. So PP is right -- her dad is eligible, but if he will not join, she will not be eligible.
Thanks for the reminder! I contacted my insurance agent and inquired about this. He asked if I was having an emergency at home and I was like, "Oh, no, someone I know said it happened to her and is spreading the word to everyone she knows about checking their coverage" ;D
When I'm talking to MH about something I read on this board, it's always, "So one of those girls said XYZ ..." and he doesn't even question it anymore, lol.

My FIL is retired from the military and we have it through him. Not sure if he has to be the one to actually do the application process for us (the policies were in place when I joined the family, and just added my car to what was already there), but it seems to me as though it would be logical to go through the qualifying member.

If your father (or husband) served and was honorably discharged they would just need to call and get a product and then you would be eligible.

I used to refer a lot of people from my local nest board to my daycare.... i told them about the nest and warned them NEVER to post on there- or they would lose business b/c we hated when vendors posted, etc. They used to talk about the nest with me all the time after that, lol. they LOVED the nest b/c it brought them a lot of business.

Anyone can bank with them now though. Zero military affiliation is required. You can get a checking or savings account. You can't get all of their offered services though.
