My counselor and I were talking about self-soothing today. I'm curious to know what things all of you do to keep yourself calm, deal with hurt, stress, frustration etc. Honestly, food is my "drug of choice/self-soothing mechanism," and I need to start finding other solutions. No matter how hard I try, or how long I am successful with healthier eating, there is always the inevitable fall.

Eating some of my favorite food helps me. Another way I help myself chill out is by reading, reading helps me get out of any kind of stressful mindset.
I think mine is sleep. And maybe booze . In periods of extreme stress, my appetite tends to go away, and I get incredibly fatigued. If given the opportunity, I can just sleep for ridiculously long stretches. And then when I wake up, I can be ready for a nap within just a few hours.
With the booze, I don't drink to drunkenness, but if I've had an exceptionally stressful day I'll just want to come home and immediately have a beer, glass of wine, gin and tonic, etc. (ONE of those, not all three... ).
sleep, or i'll go wander stores. i can wander stores like target, fred meyer, costco even the grocery store when i just don't want to be at home. sometimes i buy nothing, sometimes i buy too much. so i don't know if i can say "shopping" is what i do.
