"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I have both a scenera and a scenera next (the new version) and the next is sooo much easier to install and the fabric is nicer. I highly recommend as an occasional seat

The scenera next is a great ERF seat, but is basically outgrown RF and FF at the same time. The guide 65 is good, as is the eveflo sureride. The only issue with the sureride is that it's huge and must be installed at a 45* angle, so it takes up a ton of space RF. But, it has really tall top harness slots, so will last until booster for even the tallest kid (19" slots, so the only harnessed seat that goes taller is the frontier).

Evenflo Sureride is my favorite budget seat. It does not allow overhang RF though so if you have a car with a shirt seat, it's not a good pick. It runs around $80ish. It's currently the only seat that my DS likes.
Scenera NEXT (not original) is a great budget seat too. It can be super upright after baby can sit unassisted and the new solid colors are so pretty. It will be completely outgrown when it is outgrown RF. It is essentially a RFonly seat. It's about $40. I would skip the original scenera. It's quirky to install and won't last nearly as long.
The cosco APT50 is similar to the next but will last a little longer. It's really wide but installs fairly easy.
Guide 65 is another choice. It about $65 but requires a steep recline for babies under 22lbs. The straps can get twisty easily and that's annoying but overall it's a good seat.
Graco contender is around $120ish and has a norethread harness, is easy to install and comes in a pretty teal color

I wouldn't say the sureride takes up a lot of room RF. It fits on pretty much all midsized and some smaller cars just fine.I wouldn't consider it compact but it compresses into most setbacks nicely. The no RF overhang rule is the only isssue I've really come across and that was for a short bench in the back seat truck.
