DS is 14 weeks. This past weekend, he slept 7 hour stretches. He will give us great sleep like this from time to time and then revert back to sucky sleep.
This week, he's been waking at least every 3 hours, sometimes less. He consistently eats every 3 hours during the day.
So, my question: When he wakes up 2 hours after he's last eaten, I almost always feed him. I'm using the logic that if I'm up, I may as well fill his tummy than try to get him back to sleep and have to get up again an hour later.
I can't decide if feeding him like this is the right move or if I should be encouraging him to go back to sleep when he does this. He's young enough that I know he could need to eat, but has also shown us over and over that he's plenty capable of going much longer stretches.
At 14 weeks old I would feed at every waking. He's still such a young baby and his digestive system is so immature. He could have a growth spurt, or gas, or just need a "top off" to have a happy full belly to sleep. He's a tiny baby and hence has random needs, just because he "can go 7 hours" doesn't mean you can expect him to do so with any kind of consistency KWIM?
I hate pumping during the day. There's no way I'll do it at night. I would rather just get up and feed him like I've been doing.
Thanks for the responses, guys. I'll just keep on with what I've been doing.
I meant feed him the pumped milk from the day in the night via H and a bottle.
Ohhh. I do that on occasion, but don't feel like I pump enough during the day to do this routinely. And I don't really want to increase my pumping sessions. I don't necessarily mind getting up to feed him. It's more that I don't want to fuck something up with sleep training later. I have no idea what I'm doing. Lol
Unfortunately, this was a sign of reflux and/or ear issues (again) for DD. Treating these things made her drop all but one waking within a week. Milk soothes reflux, ears hurt when laying flat.
Well, lucky us, we're already heading to the doctor to check on these issues. In addition to the frequent wakings, he's also decided he doesn't want to nurse and only wants bottles. Suggestions for that issue were the same problems- ear infections and reflux. Maybe this will all be an easy fix and it will be a simple ear infection?
