I don't think people care at all about his "business acumen" (or lack thereof). I think people are downright racist and hate Mexicans and secretly like that their hateful opinion can now go mainstream.
Trump ran 4 years ago and didn't get nearly this level attention. He was the same business person then. Call Mexicans rapists and suddenly you've got this sleeping racist American contingent waking up and nodding along in agreement. "Finally someone telling like it is." If I had a dollar for everytime I read that comment on a Trump article I'd be rich, building hotels, and filing chapter 11 when it suits me.
I think Trump's strategic use of Chapter 11 is part of why he's considered successful.
I don't think the average voter is going to think of strategically using Chapter 11 as successful. I think the average voter is going to hear that his companies filed for bankruptcy three times and think incompetence. Can it be, absolutely... it can be a very smart move to make, but I don't think it will be received that way by the public when it is inevitably used as a talking point against him.
At this point, I think people know him and his persona from the Apprentice, and so he has decent name recognition, and a take charge take no prisoners attitude. That coupled with not being a Washington insider, and he's getting points. It's early in the game, I'm not worried about a Trump presidency.
I definitely agree with your last paragraph.
I was speaking more generally about the people who actually do pay attention to the ins and outs of Trump's businesses. Good capitalists know the ins and outs of how to use the corporate form to insulate your assets from risk. A lot of the big meltdowns, from AIG to Enron, can be traced back to gamesmanship of the corporate structure.
Trump understands this, and that's why he's successful. The ability to file for bankruptcy is a feature of this way of doing business, not a bug.
Yes, his companies filed three times...under his direction. I think it's laughable that people still think he's relatively successful in business with that type of track record. Meanwhile, Carly Fiorina never drove any company into BK and she doesn't get the same accolades. It's infuriating. I know Trump is a mouthpiece and that is why he is popular but goodness gracious it drives me batty.
I think Trump's strategic use of Chapter 11 is part of why he's considered successful.
Convenient how use of bankruptcy in business is considered "strategic" and "shrewd" but use of bankruptcy in your personal life is considered "irresponsible" and "being a deadbeat."

And you know these same people would totally compare people on food stamps to animals in the wild.
From my understanding of him in Palm Beach (I didn't run in his circles but I had friends whose families did) he was successful only because he was a big bully, not because he had any business acumen. Like how he managed to get the flight path change so that the airport near the golf course wouldn't affect their experience.
Also, his beach hotel was widely derided as being full of nouveau riche tacky. Which amuses me greatly b/c a lot of the people making complaints would also be considered social climbing golddigging not exactly on the up and up on business dealings.
The campaign sent out a release to press Tuesday afternoon saying it had filed Trump's financial disclosure with the Federal Election Commission. When asked for a copy of the full disclosure, campaign officials told CNN to request it from the FEC, and the FEC was unable to immediately confirm whether Trump has filed the form.
Also
"This report was not designed for a man of Mr. Trump's massive wealth," the press release said.
So first:
And second:
This suggests to me the disclosures are not adequate and he's setting up the basis for a shitstorm with the FEC so he can claim he was forced to exit the race.
Can you imagine being on his PR team? I want to meet the person who came up with that line. It might be one of the greatest things I've ever read. Had the statement been nothing more than a dick pic of Dirk Diggler's schlong, it would not have been more over the top than that line.

Probably the same idiot who said "yeah use the escalator and any song you like for that announcement event. It will be awesome!"

But why do people think that knowledge would translate into a successful presidency? I hear a lot of people say, "We need someone who knows how to make money running this country." I heard that a lot when Mitt was running, too. "He needs to run this country like he ran his business. Get some money up in here." When businesses file for bankruptcy, maybe the Trumps of the world do well, but what about the people cleaning rooms in his hotels for minimum wage?
Surely Ross Perot was Trump rich. He manged, maybe that was before these requirements though
Google puts Ross Perot at $3.7 billion and Trump at $4 billion. The WSJ story on the search results page says his FEC filing claims a net worth of $10 billion. Did he just do this because he was offended by how "low" his estimated net worth was?
Even if you agree with his hateful racist opinions or appreciate his business "acumen," how can you not see that the man hasn't even the slightest bit of diplomacy. None. No tact. He is a steamroller. 10 minutes into his presidency we would have nukes going on with Russia. I am not worried but seriously wtf is wrong with people.
Although a fb friend of mine is super involved in jeb bush and his right to rise campaign and that pains me about as much.

You will appreciate (especially after what you wrote readyin07) a Facebook post that I came across this morning: Iran is one thing, but what keeps me up at night is the idea of Donald Trump with nuclear weapons.
