Our neighborhood newspaper did an article on gender and the quote below (I took a pic, it was easier) they use "they." Is that correct because the person is is gender queer? I'm assuming the quote is correct especially based on the part below the quote.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I have also seen ze, hir, hirs as a gender-neutral option.
In fact, an event my community center held last weekend used these name tags for people to choose:
One of my new friends goes by Nicole, but is very masculine appearing, and dresses in a masculine way. She has a female partner who calls her Sir. I finally worked up the courage to ask what pronouns she prefers (which is the best way, really) and she said it didn't matter; she didn't care. I was afraid of offending her, but I needn't have worried. I just know that some day I will ask that question and someone WILL be offended, that I think their gender is in question enough for me to ask. It's bound to happen sooner or later!
