Kevin, the phone is a 3gs, which I believe was made in 1903, before the advent if iCloud. Jenna, thanks It's sitting in rice, but it has a white shroud of death about it.
Call Apple. You may be connected to the cloud without knowing it.
You also may be able to have someone recover the data. Odds are it is just the battery that is fried. I would use an independent tech person for this as Apple probably overcharges but the store will at least be able to give you a quote.
Thanks, you guys. Elle, that's a good idea. Someone gave me a link to try, I will probably contact them after checking at the Apple Store. I needed a new phone, but not like this, ugh. Also, Elle, is it even possible for my phone to connect to iCloud? It's so old.
It's usually just the battery that's dead. Let it sit in the rice for AWHILE. I accidentally washed H's Blackberry. Went through the whooooole cycle... Didn't realize it until I went to switch the clothes to the dryer. He left it in rice for like a week and a half... And lo and behold, it was fine!!!
I *think* it is possible to connect to the cloud with an older phone but that Apple didn't extend use of the cloud to owners of older phones because it wanted to motivate upgrades. I was thinking, though, that if you have access to the cloud for some other reason (e.g., because you have an iPad) it might be possible the iPhone also backed up to it. This may be totally wrong, but I would still check.

When I was in Florida there was a place in Tampa called iHospital. I don't know if any of their locations are close to you, but I think you can also mail your phone into them. H's iPhone fell out of his pocket while he was riding his motorcycle and it was then run over by a truck. They were able to fix it.
My screen name is Naomi spelled backwards. But my real name isn't Naomi. It's a loooooong story. Lol!
Lol I had a friend that told me I shouldn't use the name because of that. It just didn't even register on my radar as a problem, but I recognized it because of him.

Leave it in the rice for at least a week. Don't touch it. it'll need at least that long to absorb the moisture.
If you've updated your phone to the 4s operating system (any update since the 4s came out) your 3GS should be hooked up to the cloud without you actually having set anything up.
There is still hope! I hope you can recover your photos.
