The movie is heartbreaking and what's so sad is this is how animals were treated in the 1800/early 1900s. I know people like to talk smack about the PETA types, but really, if not for animal activists, they'd still be treating animals this way.
Of course the book is supposed to be 100 times better but the movie was sad enough for me. Good movie, but pretty sad.

Just got this from netflix. Sounds like it's better as a movie just for me, not a date movie with DH, right? He's working tonight so I think I'll watch it.
Is this accurate? There is a horse trainer I follow, Julie Goodnight, who put up Youtube clips of her visit to the farm where Tai and 4 other elephants live. Their trainer seemed to truly love them.
But your husband works with elephants being treated properly right? So you'd know better than me. That's horrible.
I used to work concession at the state fairgrounds for a few years. I remember seeing the elephants chained up behind the curtains. Their feet were chained and they would just sway back and forth in unison holding each other's trunks. It was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Even though we've come a long way, I just can't warm up to the idea of circuses.
I think the current trainers may love them, but they were initially trained using inhumane tactics. It's not the worst situation ever but the elephant rights crowd boycotted the movie (personally, I think they don't like it when anyone profits off an elephant in any way, which is not always the most practical view IMO). Which was too bad because then I had to sneak to see it. It wasn't as good as the book though.

Maybe that's it. It has to be a different trainer. This guy said he's with the elephants from morning until night every day, giving them baths, only using verbal commands on them.
I thought it was interesting that he said all elephants in movies/tv are female. Apparently males become too aggressive once they reach puberty. I love elephants.
