JM & sneetch, there are yeast donuts ( light, airy, like Krispy Kreme or standard sprinkle donut) and cake donuts- they have a heavy, cake-like consistency (like mini-powdered sugar donuts, or cinnamon donuts from the fair).

Nope, the difference is in the leavening agent. Cake donuts use chemical leavening (baking powder) while the more "traditional" donut is a yeasted donut (leavened, as the name implies, by yeast). Both can be plain or frosted depending on your preference although you don't typically see unfrosted yeast donuts, they're usually at least glazed.
