So we are in escrow! Woohoo! Now the fun part, figuring out what colors to paint things. The kitchen, living room/ dinning room, and family room are all connected and very open to one another. I would love to have an accent wall in the living room/ dinning room space with either a coordinating wallpaper or different color paint. Am I correct in feeling like they should be at least complimentary colors, if not the same color? Help me pick colors!
How exciting! Congratulations! What types of colors are you looking at (grays, tans, blues, etc.)? I can give you some suggestions based on that. Are you trying to incorporate existing furniture colors or are you getting new pieces? As for the wallpaper/accent wall, I am not a huge fan of either, but I would go with a painted accent wall over wallpaper. Wallpaper is not fun to change out and paint can make just as big of an impact and is much easier/less expensive to do so. With an accent wall, I would go 2 to 3 shades darker on the same paint chip as the rest of the walls.

My gut is tan but the kitchen is full of brown (pine color cabinets, dark brown countertops with a matching backsplash). We also have brown couches that we will be using in the living room. We plan to eventually swap out the backsplash for mosaic to break up all the brown (probably something with creams and blues). Is it weird if I post screen shots of their listing so you can see the space?

I would not choose tan. That would be so much tan. I like the idea of a very pale slate or blue gray. Here are some pinterest pics I grabbed. I'd probably go a shade lighter than these, so almost a neutral but a hint of color.
For that space I would go with something like Benjamin Moore's Harbour Town with accents in coral and cream to add some color and break it up. I would stay away from grays and blues as they read "cool" to me and the cabinets and counters are "warm".

What about doing a chair rail in the dining room with a darker color on the bottom, but in the same family as the color you choose for the rest of the house? I like what cabbagecabbage posted a lot.
No.more.tan. I'm going to disagree with pp. Wallpaper is not what it used to be, there are some great patterns now and you can do a custom vinyl on one wall or as a backsplash. It's completely removable, renters use it too.
Accent walls are not usually my funny but if you choose the the third chip up, also use the third chip up on another color. This way you're using the same intensity of color.
My favorite place to look at colors and palettes is design-seeds.com
I wouldn't have thought to use wallpaper but a friend had it in her dinning room (just one wall with wainscoting underneath it). The color used in the pattern is the same color in the rest of the space. It looks nice without having an entire room with patterns.
