I can't reply to everyone calling me an asshole on the UO/Flameful thread.
I have no issue with the poor, or providing them with assistance. I understand that at any given time, my current situation could change and I could be on the other side receiving the help. I was just annoyed about a few people I know personally who are abusing the system...like legit abusing...lying about income, living situations, etc. and I hate hearing about there discounted daycare while I am paying full price. That was 99.9% of what my post was about.

redheadbaker they are people I'm personally connected to, which is why I even know that they are abusing the system.
thejen626 'The poor' was in reference to one of the posts on the UO thread that said I hate the poor. This post was in response to that. No where in my original post on the UO thread did I say anything about poor people. My post in that thread turned into an SJU hates the poor.

You should still report people even if they are personally connected to you. If the fraud is real they are taking resources from people who need it. You can report anonymously
Look, I understand your frustration at a specific person you KNOW is abusing the system. I reported one of my own tenants for something, knowing full well it would mean I would not see rent for a few months and then eventually have to evict them.
But your post didn't really seem to be about an individual. It seemed to be a generalization about a large group of people, the majority of whom are hard-working, smart women and men who just need an extra hand.

I'm not that person who could actually report something like that karinothing. Instead, I just grumble about it online so that I can get lambasted about it.

I did this and it was actually really easy to do.
I would feel so guilty doing that, and then still interacting with this person on the regular.

If that's what you were implying it would have read as:
"There's a Mom at DC who I know has a great job as does her husband. Everything is well in their life. However, she told me she lied on her income report for the subsidy discount."
I mean, you'd still have received 979 "You don't their lyfe!" comments but you wouldn't have looked like the jerk your OP made you out to be.
We can all back you up on system abusers for the most part. You're not going to get backed up on "Why do the poors get everything and I don't!?"
I would have missed the confessions post and small the movie talk if not for this new post. Thanks! And thankyou h for making me not feel alone as being old enough up be @bunnybean 's mother.
Oh man, she deactivated? And here I was about to express some slate pitchy empathy.
There's something different about being confronted with the "unfairness" of social welfare policy in person. I'm a freaking communist by non-Seattle standards, and it still pisses me off to see people who are are less "deserving" than my mom qualify for SS disability and then goof off, when if they really had to, they could hold down a job. Intellectually I know that to qualify they have to have serious issues (and that mom's case had problems for other reasons), but emotionally that doesn't make it hurt less when you see it in person.
And I am not the kind of person who hits like when people post crap like "lets make the poors take drug tests to get welfare/not buy any booze/whatever" on FB.
I have a good friend who has a good job that disqualifies her from public support of any kind. She's not "the poor". That's the good news. She also has two differently abled children, their hospital bills (100K+) and a husband without much income - which is basically okay because they can't use/pay for typical care for their children, so dad SAH. I wish she would lie to get decent housing. I really, really do.
Yeah I dont think deactivation was necessary but I agree if you know people who are abusing the system (legitimately abusing it) then I think you should report anonymously.
I have a friend who does lie about her income (okay, she doesnt lie, she just hopes they dont ask) to get tuition assistance at a local daycare (and the assistance is significant). It does kind of irk me because she is telilng me to do the same - "come on! You can get a cheap rate! Just explain you all dont make that much money etc."
So, that would and does bother me. but I don't think thats what the OP was talking about.
I don't think she really knows people who are abusing the system.
I'd rather 50000 people scam the system if it means 1 person who deserves it gets it.
Yes. And statistically speaking most people use assistance as intended and aren't on it for life being lazy like many people seem to believe. Also, those that due scam the system aren't even increasing tax payers burden that much. It's really only costs us like 1 cent or something crazy. Tax dollars are wasted a lot more on other government programs.
Well actually, person first would be people who are poor, not poor people. There's really no difference between saying the poor and poor people.
Disagree. There is a difference between saying black people and the blacks. Same with poor and any other people you are describing. You may feel different, but the people you are describing find it rude and disrespectful. So says a black woman.
Poor people is not person first. The very definition of person first is that you don't describe a characteristic or disability, etc. first. So you would say people who are poor, not poor people. They are people first, not poor first. I understand what you're trying to say and I agree with you, I just wanted to clarify the person first stuff.
