I am totally clueless… back in the day everyone had box springs underneath the mattress… we have a twin Jenny Lind bed for my 4 yo. I was thinking I just needed a mattress and DH thinks we need box mattress & box spring…. how do we know? What's the benefit for a box spring?
I think it depends on the bed. If it has a platform you don't need a box spring, but if it just has slats you need a box spring. Maybe there is a more scientific way to tell, but that's how I would decide.
Where ever you purchased the bed frame should specify if it needs a box spring or not. Most of the Jenny Lind beds I'm finding online don't require (and actually say you shouldn't use) a box spring...

It's an older bed that I refinished and painted. So no instructions. But it does have the old style wood slats (3 of them)

Wait, you don't need a box spring if there are slats. Platform beds are beds that contain slats Like this:

if it only has 3 slats, you need a box spring.
The newer beds that don't require a box spring have around 15 slats

Most mattresses don't have any sort of internal structural support so they need to sit on a box spring which provides the support to prevent the mattress from sagging. If the bed has a lot of slats or a bunky board is used, then you don't also need a box spring. You mentioned the bed only has 3 slats, so a box spring or bunky board would be needed.
