So DS is going through "something". He is 10.5 months. Monday he only took 5oz of milk total at daycare and was cranky. He was up often that night and nursed often but woke up with a dry diaper on Tuesday morn. He did have one wet diaper at daycare Tuesday but drank NOTHING all day despite trying milk and water in bottles and was cranky. So on the way home yesterday I called the doc and doc said get DS checked out for dehydration at the ER - so we went last night. ER docs said he didn't look dehydrated and to try pedialyte. He has no other symptoms. No vomiting, diarrhea, congestion, running nose, drooling, etc. ETA: also he is happy and playful, crawling, etc. - no sings of being lethargic.
DS nursed 3 times Tuesday eve and about 3 times overnight. Woke up today with a *wet* diaper in that he might have peed once. We dropped DD off at camp and went to the store for pedialyte and are now home and he is sleeping.
So - what the hell? Doc says you really want a minimum of 3 wet diapers a day, so today I am home and just gonna nurse the heck out of him and try to push pedialyte somehow. Yesterday I was resorting to lightly squirting his bottle of water into his mouth but he just spit out the water (who does that?).
Any other ideas for pushing fluids? We have a sippy cup too but he hasn't figured it out yet.
Ugh. That sucks. At that age my kids were hit or miss on the diff pedialyte flavors and refused the plain. If he likes Popsicles they make pedialyte ones (or reg fruit juice pops too) if he'll drink juice do that (maybe with a fun straw if he uses them) or even one of those mesh feeders with ice cubes in it? My big kids (2 and 4) still like to crunch ice in those stupid things. Also juicy foods are good too: Watermelon, applesauce...(
Good luck
ETA. Just saw he doesn't do the sippy cup. What if you took the valve out? It will be drippy and messy, but he'll get some water
ETA 2: Did the doctor check his mouth for sores? When my kid got hfm the last time he got mouth sores first before other symptoms
DD won't drink Pedialyte. I don't blame her, it's kind of gross. I did have to force it down her with a Tylenol syringe. I did one syringe and hour until she peed.
Also ice chips. DD is obsessed with ice and this is the best way for me to hydrate her when she's sick. (I use the crushed feature on our freezer door and pick out the super big pieces)
DS had a similar phase for about a week following an illness when he was cutting all 4 top teeth. It was rough.
Ditto - ice pops, watermelon (frozen or not), applesauce is a high-water food, and we were able to get DS to eat pedialyte popsicles (available next to the pedialyte liquid) despite always refusing to drink it.
goddammit. Pedialyte contains milk ingredients? Does any one know if it contains milk protein?
He JUST woke up and had an ounce of pedialyte in a bottle (yay!) and then nursed and peed again (yay!) so I think this could be going okay. I have juice too that I will try later.
