Growing up in MN I've done this countless times every winter. I might pause at the van in the alley situation though and I probably wouldn't if I was in a hurry.

In this situation, no. At most I'd say I would look up a number for a tow company on my phone while I stood in a very public area if he didn't have a smart phone for some reason. (Thinking a tow place may also be able to come with jumper cables or what not).
Someone I know needing a jump, like a co worker? Yes I'd help. I may even help a stranger in a very public lot with lots of people around. But a man with a van in some aide alley? Sorry, buddy.

I will normally help someone jump start their car if I have the van. The Prius can't be used for that purpose. In this situation, I would not have helped. I'm not going into an alley with someone I don't know.
Someone broke down in a parking lot, maybe, but not in my current car. Apparently it's too fancy and can mess up things or something. Or maybe that's what my husband told me so I wouldn't stop to help strange men.

I will admit I wouldn't have the first clue how to jump a car. This is flameful.
But i'd be happy to help in a public lot during the day time in full view of other people presuming the other person knew what they were doing with the jumper cables.
I would not, however, follow someone into an alley and jump their car even if I was a whizz at jumping cars and had tons of time on my hand.

And I'll admit here that I do technically know HOW to jump a car, but I am always paranoid about getting electrocuted or shocked or blown up, so I typically stay far away and let someone else do it lol. Also probably flameful. I know if you do it right, that wouldn't happen, but I can't help it.
Honestly, I would be hesitant to jump someone again. The last time I helped someone the guy hooked the battery up incorrectly (sparks) and the next day I needed a new one. Many large establishments these days have portable starters plugged in and constantly receiving a trickle charge. Twice we've needed a jump and security came out to us with their jump box.

I'm the same way. I always worry that I'll get it wrong.

this. jumpstarting a car was one of my dad's requirements before i could get my license so i'm sure i could figure it out eventually, but i'm no handy many.
Nope. That far away is sketchy as hell. I'd tell dude that's what CAA is for (or is it AAA in the states). If it happened to be the vehicle right beside me, and it wasn't a 'look at me, I'm a murderer' van, I'd likely do it.
