I think I have this, but I'm not sure, even with doing the thing that the interwebs recommend you do to check. :\
Dd is almost 17 months. I should probably make an appointment with someone.
I couldn't tell for sure either and my OB never examined me (thanks!) but I'm seeing a PT for pelvic floor issues and she checked and gave me exercises.
About a year after kid #3. Too long. It helped a lot. They're still separated but my core is much stronger so it doesn't cause as much trouble anymore.
Could you tell before delivery that they were split?
Yes, in my case I could tell. They didn't split during the first and most certainly did during my second, most likely because of how close together they were and how much weight I gained for both. I had a noticeable hernia during my second and that spot is still not normal (to the touch, it looks fine, other than fat, lol).
I will make an appointment for myself at DSs 4 month well visit and ask for a referral to PT. I don't want to wait if I don't have to.
I started at about 4 mos pp. But that was mostly because it took that long for me to be able to even think about something like pt because the first few months were a blur of colic and nursing. Also before that I didn't have anyone to watch the girls while I went.
Eta: My pt specializes in DR and she recommends coming in as soon as possible because any sort of exercise, especially ab ones, can make it worse. Many people don't realize this and try to work out and correct it.

I hope it helps.
May I ask what your hernia felt like? I have a spot that looks completely normal, but is quite painful. It feels like a bruise if I touch it and is sore overall. Occasionally it will burn. One of the suggestions (thanks, preppy) is that it may be a hernia.

So when I was pregnant it was a visible bump by my belly button, just to the right of it. Kind of looked like the baby had an elbow sticking there, except he didn't. Mine has yet to ever hurt.
My core has always been weak. I am also hyper mobile. And still have relaxin at work. All these things combined make for a very uncomfortable core. I have already had to go to chiro post partum for my SI joint. I am worried that my abs won't ever heal and that my core will be forever weak(er). Plus I am sure it is contributing to making me look 5 months pregnant still.
