We called my parents to tell them that DS has arrived and announced his name then (DS's first name is my Dad's first name and we did not discuss names with them throughout my pregnancy). We could tell over the phone he was speechless and later on my Mom said he was beaming for days
DS's middle name is DH's grandfather's first name. We were very close with DH's grandparents (they have both since passed). When we found out DS was a boy, and we'd settled on a name, we sat down with GFIL. We said "we know it's sometimes considered bad luck to name a child after a living family member. But we love you very much, and would like to name our son ____ ______ in your honor." He was delighted.

Not family per se, but Sparkybaby's middle name is the name of the lady that rescued my husband when he had his car wreck. We're facebook friends, so I sent her a message "introducing" her to the baby.

DD1's middle name is after my favorite aunt. We told her we wanted to name our daughter after her while I was still pregnant; I think we said something along the lines of, "because you are so special to us..."
DS's middle name is after my FIL; when he and MIL came to meet the baby in the hospital, H simply told him the name we chose, which was enough to bring tears to FIL's eyes.
DD has the same middle name as me, and it's my mom's first name. Coincidentally, it's also SIL's middle name. I just always knew if I had a girl, I'd give her that middle name, so it was never really a discussion or a big production.
Same here .. DD, my niece and I all share the same mn that happens to be my mom's first name !
