The public schools in this area start August 24th. DD is in private school & she starts the 26th. I have a friend in the Atlanta area & her DD starts this Monday, August 3rd.

We're in NC. They stagger the start of kindergarten, and DS's first day is August 26. We are going school shopping this weekend. He is fairly blase about it accept for picking a backpack, which he's super excited about.

This thread makes me sad. It also makes me realize I'm almost halfway through this pregnancy!! Ummm I go back the 25th of August, kids come on sept. 1. Normally we start after Labor Day but the district got a variance due to the lateness of LD.
Aug 11th. Thankfully we just order supplies through the school and the box is already there. I still have to buy uniforms but I did get his all white, geriatric, Velcro tennis shoes. Who ever sets this dress code must not have kids.

I don't understand why districts would move it because Labor Day is "late." The date changes every year, last year it was "early" and they didn't start school later. I mean, yes it means you seemingly go later the next summer, but it's all relative, still the same length of summer and school year.
But a lot of that is driven by where I live, there would be some pretty mad people if many districts started before Labor Day. Everyone is still down the shore.

I'm so surprised we're starting before Labor Day in Jersey. It's the first time I ever remember this happening. It's weird. I'm not sure why we are going back just that Friday. Usually we start the Wednesday after Labor Day, so starting Tuesday instead would have made sense since it's late. But then, we already aren't getting out until June 20, so I guess they had to sneak that day in somewhere. We have the first day on Friday, are off Monday, then are on for good.

It's so weird. There's a note about it on the district's website basically saying that yes there's school that day, yes it's a full day and yes they need everyone in attendance. I'm guessing a few people expressed issues with it lol!

Oh, I'm absolutely certain. If I'm being honest, I can't imagine there aren't a ton of families that scheduled a 4 day weekend because most of the town commutes to the city and the train will be nuts that night (commuters always take off that Friday and Memorial Day Weekend). I'm sure even people who aren't away that week planned to be away or doing fun stuff that day to end summer. We live at the shore, summer is in our blood lol!

Ds starts Aug. 26th for public school. Dd's preschool doesn't start till mid-Sept. I remember last year being really annoyed that dd started so much later, but this year I don't mind at all, I'm just looking forward to them having some time apart because too much togetherness is killing me a bit.

It's driven by testing. A late start means less instruction before "the test". It's a big deal here too, we have a state law, driven by the tourism industry (ie: State fair) that school cannot start until after labor day. But when testing comes into play, the state waives it if asked.
Where you live everyone is "down the shore" here, everyone is "at the lake" I'm sure it's something everywhere.
