Are you looking for feedback on your budget specifically, or just the logistics of how to manage a budget?
I use Excel spreadsheets. I have monthly budget sheets and yearly, and update them as bills come in and as we spend money. I currently have the following categories:
Mortgage Rental mortgage/utilities Insurance (all policies are together) Home warranty Gas (home) City utilities Cable/internet Phones Groceries Joint fun money My fun money Husband's fun money Gas (cars) Beauty (haircuts, basic makeup/skincare) Pets Gifts Home expenses (yard, furniture, remodel, etc) Rental expenses Car repairs/registration Clothing Travel Baby stuff (currently TTC) Medical Charity/donations/church offerings Misc. Roth Savings/MFs
The categories are pretty clear. We made our own definition of separate fun money, and what is considered a joint expense. I try to keep expenses out of the misc line, because they become more difficult to track. This system has worked very well for me for the past couple of years.
ETA: some clarification. Also, our definitions of personal money: anything beyond a normal, necessary expense. I don't think that I should have less disposable money because I have womanly expenses of more expensive hair and skin care. The beauty category covers basic items, and any extra just-for-fun item comes out of my own money. Same goes for both of our clothes. Normal new clothes are joint, but my husband's 50th pair of athletic shoes comes out of his own budget. Any activity we do together is joint (eat, coffee, movies), but anything alone or with friends is our own. My husband is basically on board with whatever I tell him, so that makes the system easier.
