My son is about to turn six months and is getting his first teeth. WhenI look in his mouth I can see the outline of one of the teeth - it's a whiter outline in his gum line.
Two questions: 1) how long do you think it will be until the teeth come through? Are we talking a few days? Weeks? 2) what was nursing like while teething? I'm getting nervous about this. The last day or so his latch has been shallower. I can also feel the tooth. It's not necessary painful, but it's not comfortable either.
Days until it pops through but weeks until it's fully in. The painful part is just while it's actually cutting though.
My dd, and I've read others here too, did this weird grazing thing with her teeth on my nipple. Like playing with them/adjusting to them. It hurt but it only lasted a few days until she was used to her teeth. Sometimes I would unlatch her and relatch and it helped a little
1) days for the first 8 teeth. Molars and canines have been months.
2) you'll probably get bitten. It's always worst when he's feeling a new tooth and it's an odd sensation in his mouth. He's over it within a day or two and nursing is fine again until the next tooth starts.
1) days for the tooth to break the gum, weeks for it to fully come through. He'll be getting teeth off and on for the next year or more, it takes a long time!
2.) his latch will be funky for a few days while he adjusts to the new tooth. You'll feeling some pulling and scraping, maybe biting. If you're diligent about fixing the latch EVERY TIME it's uncomfortable, it will be fixed faster. Treat him like a newborn. Get a good hold, tummy to tummy, head in alignment, wide open mouth, fishy lips. Break the latch and readjust him if necessary. Pain meds are your friend, use Tylenol (and ibuprofen once he hits 6 months) if needed. Getting teeth hurts!
I can only answer the first one. DD's take a few days to come through. My doctor strongly recommended Motrin starting at 6 months for teething. It works so much better than tylenol.
C has been working on his first 6 teeth for over a month now (we went to urgent care on 6/27 and she said they were really close). I think two are actually through the gums as of the past two days. I can see them and feel them when I'm feeding him solids.
C's latch is definitely different and there have been a couple biting incidents. I'm also terrified of how this will change things BFing wise.
Also, he's making a new noise...it's a combination of clicking his tongue and smacking his lips...probably wondering what's going on in his mouth with his new teeth coming in
DD wanted to nurse less while teething (except for her molars) and DS has so far wanted to nurse more while teething. So, nothing is a given!
DD also had to seriously learn to adjust her latch once she got top teeth (there was a lot of biting and sinking of teeth into my nipple) while DS didn't skip a beat after getting his top teeth last month. Nursing with him doesn't feel any different now than before he had teeth.
